Beginning Oct 1, Cape Girardeau Public Library will begin assessing charge to some residents living within corporate boundaries of city but outside municipal library district; library director Elizabeth Ader says charge is nothing new to residents living outside city limits, but a must for those living outside municipal library district.

Pumpkins may be in short supply this year; locally, pumpkin crop has been hit with virus; yields are down, but local growers say there's no need to panic, and plenty of pumpkins will be available locally; nationally, bad weather could mean fewer jack-o'-lanterns and pumpkin pies this fall.

25 years ago: Sept. 27, 1978

Local participation in railway clerks' strike which swept nation during past two days appears limited, with three major railroads in Southeast Missouri area reporting near normal activity; meanwhile, Illinois Central Gulf Railroad, which has divisional office in Carbondale, Ill., reports it remains strikebound for second day, although court orders against picketing have been issued.

Suggestion that all Nell Holcomb School District high school pupils be sent to University High in order to save tuition money has been discounted by Holcomb superintendent and Milford Holt, dean of teacher education at Southeast Missouri State University

50 years ago: Sept. 27, 1953

Preliminary work preparatory to awarding of two contracts for main construction job is under way at Broadway School, purchased recently by group of Cape Girardeau doctors for conversion into medical center; Fred Dormeyer Jr., architect for project, says workers on day basis are removing plaster, old doors and frames, heating plant, steam lines, radiators and plumbing; while this is going on, working drawings from which bid will be made are being prepared.

Announcement is made of transfer of the Rev. Herbert Melies, pastor of Catholic parish at New Hamburg, to St. Andrew Church in LeMay, St. Louis County; the Rev. John W. Baker, pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Church in Luebbering in St. Louis County, has been assigned to St. Lawrence Church.

75 years ago: Sept. 27, 1928

Albert P. Rueseler, owner and proprietor of Rueseler Motor Co., 221 N. Fountain, has purchased building occupied by his business and lot adjacent on south from Himmelberger-Harrison Lumber Co., it is announced; Rueseler says company contemplates extensive improvements on site, which will be made next year; he is dealer for Chevrolet automobiles.

Second annual Cape Girardeau County Fox Hunters Association meet will be held Oct. 23 through 25, one mile west of Millersville at Fairview Station, according to Dale Reed, secretary of organization; every fox hunter in county is invited to participate.
