25 years ago: Sept. 3, 1984

Labor Day. Because of a state law enacted last year, most of Missouri's 546 school districts, including those in Southeast Missouri, are opening tomorrow, the Tuesday after Labor Day for the first time in more than a decade.

Dr. John M. Freeze, Cape Girardeau dentist, has purchased one-half of a building at 2857 Independence St., from Dr. Charles T. Herbert, whose offices occupy the other half; Freeze is relocating his office to the new space.

50 years ago: Sept. 3, 1959

Prospects are bleak for reassignment of about $22,000 in federal funds for construction of sewage and water facilities to serve the new administration building at the municipal airport; the money was part of a $30,000 grant previously made by the Federal Aviation Agency; the agency did allow funds from this sum for installation of taxiway and apron lights and fencing but denied it for sewage, water, entrance roads and lights for the auto parking area.

Four boats and the dock to which they were moored at the River View Boat Docks on Pecan Street were damaged yesterday, when they were struck by a towboat.

75 years ago: Sept. 3, 1934

Rain dampens Labor Day plans; the big community picnic, sponsored by the Lions Club and Parent-Teacher Council, is postponed until Tuesday and Wednesday at Fairground Park; events will be divided between the two days.

Rotarians hear Edward L. Markham Jr. recount his impressions and experiences during a recent trip to Honolulu at the regular dinner meeting at Hotel Marquette.

100 years ago: Sept. 3, 1909

It is said that local men are to put a large automobile in commission that will make regular trips between Cape Girardeau and Jackson; the fare will be 50 cents each way, and trips will be made as often as necessary; the new service should be inaugurated before the end of the month.

A.C. Magill and family arrived in Cape Girardeau from Bonne Terre, Mo., yesterday and will live at 16 N. Fountain St.; Magill is one of the new professors at the Normal School.
