SAN DIEGO -- When the nation's sixth-largest city recently honored 17 San Diego area residents as "Headliners of the Year," two of the honorees turned out to be Southeast Missouri State University graduates; Bill Stacy was honored for his contributions to education, and Dr. Jerry Caulder was recognized for his advancements in the biotech field.

Sen. Strom Thurmond, Republican of South Carolina, was the guest speaker at a Lincoln Day gathering at the Arena Building last night; Thurmond warned district Republicans freedom is being threatened by the Communist goal of world domination; he called for increased use of air and sea power in Vietnam.

Donald L. Dickerson, chairman of the 10th District and Cape Girardeau County Democratic committees, and Lewis Simpson, Oregon County farmer and former state representative, have been selected by district Democrats as nominees for the bipartisan reapportionment commission.

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- The Chaffee City Council has rescinded its earlier action granting a year's leave of absence to Mayor O.T. Honey, declared the office vacant, and certified notice for election of a new mayor to fill two years of the unexpired four-year term when the regular municipal election is held in April; Honey is a lieutenant and band leader in the 140th Infantry of the Missouri National Guard.

Three recruits for the Army were sent to Jefferson Barracks yesterday for final examination and enlistment; one was Otto A. Harmon of Cape Girardeau Route 2, who was rejected when he volunteered last month because of missing teeth; he had the difficulty repaired and was able to enlist; the other two sent to an Air Corps post were Daniel F. Huffman of Randles and Charles R. Coker of Cape Girardeau.

Down at Sikeston, Missouri, where a year ago they voted "dry" with a vengeance and put a dozen splendid grog shops out of business, they are now going after the sellers of near-beer.

S.A. Ruch, president of the German-American Bank at Chaffee, Missouri, and also president of the Ruch Lumber Co. of the same place, is in Cape Girardeau buying the finishing material for his fine new $2,000 bungalow; his company employs 65 men; it is currently installing a new 10-inch band mill in connection with its hoop mill.
