Three people filed for seats on the Cape Girardeau Board of Education yesterday, the first day of filing; seeking a three-year term on the board are Patrick R. Ruopp and Gwen Bennett; seeking a one-year, unexpired seat is Lyle A. Davis.

With the new year, longtime Associate Circuit Judge William S. Rader of the Missouri Circuit Division II has retired from the bench; Rader, a Democrat, was appointed to the court in Cape Girardeau County in 1980 by Gov. Joseph Teasdale and won re-election in 1982 and 1886.

1966

Rainfall averaging 3 to 3 1/2 inches over the county sent creeks out of their banks in many areas over the New Year's weekend, but little damage has been reported; Cape Girardeau received 2.87 inches downtown.

Two major State College projects -- the high-rise dormitory complex and the language arts building -- are closed down by a strike of union iron workers who are seeking a new contract; members of Local 782, Iron Workers Union, headquartered in Paducah, Kentucky, are striking both projects.

1941

For three hours, city firemen fight a blaze in the building housing the Cape Cut Rate drug store, 701 Broadway, and living quarters on two upper floors; the fire, which originated in the basement, does an estimated $23,000 damage; stock and equipment of the drug store are entirely wiped out, to the tune of $15,000, according to owner Max Blitstein; the three-story brick at the southwest corner of Broadway and Sprigg Street is owned by F.F. Braun.

Seventy National Guardsmen say farewell to Cape Girardeau in the evening, and by 4 a.m. tomorrow will be off to the rapidly-growing Army camp near Little Rock, Arkansas, to continue the year of modern military training.

1916

Circuit court opens in the morning at Jackson with a prayer by the Rev. F.W. Carnett of First Baptist Church; the sheriff administers the oath to the jurors: Chris Haman, A.P. Behrens, C.E. Kage and W.C. LaPierre.

The Cape Girardeau City Council, at its first meeting of the new year, passes an ordinance unanimously authorizing and directing the issuance of bonds to the amount of $40,000 for the park system; the city clerk is instructed to deliver the bonds to the Sturdivant Bank, the purchaser.
