A large yellow ribbon was tied around Southeast Hospital's flagpole yesterday, as the institution bid farewell to employees who have been or are being called to active military duty in the Persian Gulf; they are Vincent Glueck, Richard Kinsey, Norman Anderson, H. Charles Mosebach and Brenda Taul.

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Brim & Associates, a management firm of Portland, Oregon, has been hired to take over the management of Chaffee General Hospital; the sixth-month agreement will begin next week; after that time, a permanent contract may be signed.

1966

The Jackson City Council has officially recognized the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers as the representative of 11 of the 14 city water and light department employees; the city has agreed to begin negotiations for a contract at its next meeting, Jan. 17.

The Cape Girardeau post office, on the thrust of its new status as a sectional center plus the normal increase in business, far exceeded previous mail handling records last year, receiving or dispatching 34,150,000 pieces; this is a whopping 20 percent increase over the mail processed here in 1964.

1941

Cape Girardeau's Home Guard company was organized last night at a meeting of the volunteers at the office of J. Grant Frye; an initial roster of 25 officers and men were sworn in by Lt. Joe E. Moore, commanding officer of Service Company of Missouri National Guard; Frye, a World War veteran, past state commander of the American Legion and past commander of the Louis K. Juden Post of the Legion, was elected to command the union.

Edgar O. Schoembs, district supervisor in Southern Illinois and Southeast Missouri for an insurance company for four years, is the new manager of the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce; he succeeds Harry L. Coffman, who resigned.

1916

Dr. P.R. Williams, father of Dr. Paul and Roy Williams, is critically ill at his residence on South Ellis Street, a victim of poison contracted from a patient he attended Saturday; the poison was taken into his body through a scratch on his right hand.

E.C. Allen has taken a lease on the Riverview Hotel here from Bowman Brothers, agents for Mrs. Dunlop, the owner; Arthur Bowman has been running the hotel for several months.
