The moon glided in front of the sun yesterday, creating a partial eclipse that turned the sun into a crescent of light; more than 100 people converged on the courtyard between Rhodes Hall and Johnson Hall at Southeast Missouri State University to view the partial eclipse through safe filters and several telescopes; the eclipse bathed the Cape Girardeau area in a noticeably different shade of sunlight.

The Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce's membership is over the 1,150 mark following a one-day recruitment blitz Tuesday that resulted in at least 71 new memberships; the goal had been to acquire 65 new members.

At a recent voters' assembly of the St. Paul Lutheran congregation at St. Paul Church in Jackson, it was resolved to proceed with plans for an addition to the affiliated school; a fund-raising committee will be appointed by the church president, Loyd Birk, in the near future; architect for the project is Thomas E. Phillips of Cape Girardeau.

Members of State College's fraternities and sororities held their annual Greek Games at Capaha Park yesterday, with 500 to 600 students from 10 organizations participating; events included a tug-of-war, egg-eating contest, obstacle horse, horse and rider, and a relay race.

In two telegrams, identical except for the names of the soldiers, the War Department yesterday advised relatives of the deaths of two Jackson soldiers -- Pvt. Walter Burgfeld, 37, and Cpl. John T. Klobe, 36 -- on the European battle front.

Pvt. Eldon Bollinger, 21, of Cape Girardeau, assigned to a tank corps at Camp Campbell, Kentucky, was badly injured Tuesday at the camp while placing a tire on an automobile; his father, Grover Bollinger of Cape Girardeau, who was at Camp Campbell last night to see his son, was told that the car fell on young Bollinger's head and he sustained a skull fracture.

1919

One hundred and sixty mothers and daughters were served at the two-course supper, which was given for them at the Presbyterian Church Friday night; credit for the success of the evening is given Anita Huters, chairman of the committee, and Mrs. Russell Dearmont, chairman of the evening.

Mission Day is observed at McKendree Methodist Church in Jackson; at the morning service, Judge Frank Kelly of Cape Girardeau speaks on "100 Years' Missionary Work," reviewing the accomplishments of the Methodist Episcopal Church and other churches in bringing the gospel to the peoples of the world; in the evening Dr. C.G. Hounshell, who has just returned to the United States from Korea, speaks on "Conditions in the Orient."
