Navy Seaman Edward Gardner of Scott City, a fireman who was aboard the guided-missile destroyer USS Conyngham when fire erupted on ship Tuesday, is released from Portsmouth Naval Hospital; he and 17 other sailors were injured when the fire started as the main boiler was being lit; 12 of those sailors were treated at the hospital; one sailor was killed in the fire.

The City Council's action Monday to change engineering plans on Lexington Drive is apparently yet to be resolved; members of the city's Planning and Zoning Commission, visibly perturbed by the council's action, recommends the council reconsider the Lexington issue and proceed with plans to make the street a 44-foot-wide arterial route.

The Couples Club of First Presbyterian Church hosts a family picnic in the afternoon at Scivally Park, part of the congregation's Mother's Day observance.

State College track coach Marvin Rosengarten is both pleased and disappointed with the Indians' fourth-place finish in the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association track meet at Rolla, Missouri Friday and Saturday; he was happy with Paul Ebaugh's first place in discus, and pleasantly surprised with Jim McClellan's second in the javelin; However, the Indians failed to score a point in the distance races, which were expected to be one of their strongest events.

1940

So as to give all an opportunity to see Cape Girardeau's own movie in its one-day showing at the Broadway Theater next Wednesday, a special matinee will be staged for school children; tickets are sold to interested youngsters for 10 cents each; those who purchase tickets will be dismissed from classes in time to see the show.

The four-story, 40-foot drill tower located at the rear of the fire department building is being razed by members of the department under the supervision of Commissioner Phil Steck; the boards in the tower are decayed and unsafe for use; it was erected in 1933 by Commissioner E.P. Ellis for a fire school held at that time and has been used since then for drills; there are no plans to replace it.

About 50 relatives of Mrs. Marie Johanna Boeller gather at the farm home of one of her sons, Charles Engelmann, near Oak Ridge to help celebrate the 90th birthday of the venerable lady; there are 51 direct descendants: four sons, two daughters, 18 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild; relatives attend the party from Cape Girardeau, Dutchtown, Jackson, Appleton, and Arnsburg, Missouri, and Murphysboro, Illinois.

The Campbell boys -- Harry, Donald and Bertie -- of Allenville left this week for Wichita, Kansas, to join the Morrow Brothers Circus.
