Thanksgiving Day. An interdenominational worship service is conducted at Centenary Methodist Church in the morning; the Rev. Max D. Sullivan preaches on the topic, "Thanks for Pain"; the service is sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Ministerial Alliance.

CHESTER, Ill. -- An uneasy calm has settled over the dull brownstone walls of Menard Prison, as authorities investigate the causes of a bloody riot late Tuesday afternoon that took the lives of three prison guards and left six others with serious wounds; being studied are the charges to be filed against the rebellious prisoners who flung a fiery Molotov cocktail at a guard cage in the dining room, and then went on a murderous rampage.

A substantial order for surgical dressings, to be supplied to the War Department as part of its Army defense contracts and received by the American White Cross Laboratories Inc., has put the firm's plants here and at New Rochelle, New York, on full-time operation; much of the absorbent cotton used in making up the "battle dressing" is being made up at the local plant and then sent on to New Rochelle, where the dressings are assembled.

BENTON, Mo. -- Announcement has been made by the Scott County Draft Board of the original contingent of men to fill the first draft quota from this county; the five, who will report to Jefferson Barracks on Friday, are William V. Brown, James W. Crader and Leon A. Gettings of Chaffee, Missouri, Harry A. Enderle of Commerce, Missouri, and Woodrow W. Hughes of Morley, Missouri.

1915

Thanksgiving Day. Union Thanksgiving services are held in the morning at Centenary Methodist Church; Dr. J.C. Handy, Centenary's new pastor, preaches the sermon.

John Wood Moore, a fisherman all his life on the Mississippi River, goes to a watery grave a few miles below Cape Girardeau; Moore's wife happens to be aboard a passenger boat near the point where her husband drowns and witnesses the "last convulsive leap the skiff made before it dove to the bottom, carrying her husband with it."
