Since the Cape Girardeau Federal Building now has a full-time U.S. magistrate, full security screening of people entering the building has been implemented; everyone entering the building must go through the front door and through a metal detector; all bags are searched.

The Cape Girardeau City Council Monday agreed to end a five-month debate on construction contractor regulations, approving a scaled-down version of a trades-licensing law that members called far from perfect.

1966

Three attorneys and a newspaperwoman have been appointed by Calvin Chapman, president of the Cape Girardeau Mental Health Association, to work with Sen. Albert M. Spradling Jr., in furthering the location of a comprehensive mental health clinic here; the attorneys are Earl S. Mackey, Timothy Ruddy and Marvin "Buck" Wright; the woman is Judith Ann Crow, a Missourian staff member.

Cape Girardeau's new Teen Age Club building will be formally dedicated tomorrow afternoon; the building is on Broadview Street, next to the Teamsters Building; an open house will follow the ceremony.

1941

In order to accept the Christian Church pastorate at Neosho, Missouri, the Rev. John A. Abel submits his resignation as pastor of the Christian Church here; he will leave in five or six weeks; Abel came to Cape Girardeau from Clarinda, Iowa, in March 1939.

After a brief stop in Boston, John W. and Glenn Wissman, sons of Mrs. Willie Wissman of Cape Girardeau, are again bound for duty in the waters around Iceland aboard their ship, the U.S.S. McCormick, a destroyer; John enlisted in the Navy two years ago last July, while Glenn has seen service for a year in September.

1916

The sea wall that will protect the site of the new Frisco passenger depot here is finished in the afternoon; there remains only the balustrade on top of the wall to be erected to complete the contract the McMurry Construct Co. has with the railroad.

The steamer Stacker Lee, due to pass Cape Girardeau Monday, sank late yesterday evening a few miles north of Memphis; the big vessel slowly settled beneath the water, while it was tied to the bank for the night because of low water; the officers had feared to navigate the boat at night with a tremendous cargo of cotton and cement; the vessel was valued at approximately $50,000 and is considered a total loss; the cotton, because of the unusually high price offered at market, is valued at nearly $100,000 and may be saved; the cement is ruined.
