Southeast volleyball team falls to visiting Memphis

Memphis won its 14th consecutive game Sunday by beating Southeast 30-28, 30-26, 25-30, 30-27.

Suzanne Gundlach had 13 kills and 12 digs for Southeast (3-14). Sarah Frost added 10 kills, and Emily Scannell had 42 assists and 14 digs. The Otahkians finished with 16 blocks.

Southeast plays its next five matches on the road, starting Friday with Tennessee Tech.

Southeast soccer beats Morehead St. on the road

The Otahkians' Megan Hejlek scored the lone goal and Southeast improved to 7-2-3 overall with a 1-0 win at Morehead State.

Heather Reding and Marla Gianino teamed up for the assist. Southeast (2-0 Ohio Valley Conference) had a 17-9 edge in shots against Morehead State (2-7-1, 0-2).

A field of more than 40 competitors was narrowed to eight winners Sunday in the sectional round of the NFL Pepsi Punt, Pass and Kick event at Central Junior High School in Cape Girardeau.

Winners from the eight categories from ages 8 to 15 will have their scores compared to other sectional winners in the region to determine who advances to the area final at the Edward Jones Dome.

Age-group winners Sunday were Matthew Zeller of Jackson and Lindsey Hindman of Dexter in ages 8-9; Dylan Craig of Murphysboro, Ill., and Kylie Seyer of Jackson in ages 10-11; Curtis Sturms of Jackson and Hannah Thompson of Jackson in ages 12-13; and Sean Odneal of Ste. Genevieve and Rachelle Runge of Marion, Ill., in ages 14-15.

Lutheran South takes Jackson softball title

Lutheran South defeated Kelly 3-2 to win the Jackson Invitational softball tournament Saturday.

Sullivan defeated Jackson 5-3 for third place. Elizabeth Nussbaum took the loss with five strikeouts, three walks and three earned runs. Kelley Lichtenegger was 3-for-3 and Trisha Kluesner 2-for-4 with a triple.

In other games, Central defeated Nerinx Hall 5-1 for fifth place, and Seckman defeatedFox 6-3 for seventh place.
