Southeast soccer battles Memphis to 1-1 tie

Southeast Missouri State University's women's soccer team played host Memphis to a 1-1 double-overtime tie Tuesday night.

The Otahkians are 1-1-2 and the Tigers are 0-2-2.

After a scoreless first half, Memphis grabbed a 1-0 lead midway through the second half and it looked like the game would end that way.

But Southeast's Erin Slattery scored just seconds before the end of regulation, off an assist from Ashley DeRoy. Neither squad scored in the overtime periods.

Memphis held a 17-13 edge in shots. Southeast goalkeeper Amanda Wrzos was credited with five saves.

Southeast plays its first home game Friday as IUPUI visits Houck Stadium at 7 p.m.

SIU wins Southeast golf tournament

Southern Illinois edged Samford to win the Harris Fall Classic hosted by Southeast at Bent Creek Golf Course in Jackson.

SIU finished with a two-day, 54-hole score of 877 to capture the 16-team event that concluded Tuesday. Samford shot 880. Tennessee Tech was third at 887. Southeast tied for seventh at 898.

Samford's Andy McRae was the individual medalist with a 7-under-par 209. Tennessee State's Robert Dinwiddie finished second at 211.

Southeast's top finisher was Brian Sheehan, who tied for 10th at 221. Also for the Indians' main team, Kent Phillips and Brandon Couch tied for 25th (225); Matt Hillis tied for 47th (229); and Justin Setser tied for 71st (239).

Several other Indians participated as individuals. Mark Schmitz tied for 21st (224); Matt Litzelfelner and Nathan Sprague tied for 52nd (233); Ryan McNeil tied for 59th (234); Zack Decker tied for 63rd (235); and Keith Ware tied for 77th (244).

Southeast baseball to hold walk-on tryouts

Southeast's baseball team will hold a tryout for walk-on players at 5 p.m. Thursday at Capaha Field.

Any Southeast students interested in trying out for the team should attend.

Stoverink, Bartels win SEMO Horseshoe event

Cori Stoverink and Kevin Bartels placed first in the Southeast Missouri Horseshoe Association event held Sunday at the Knights of Columbus in Leopold, Mo.

The team of Perry Seyes and Sheila LeGrand placed second while Clayton Stoverink and Jacob Vandevin took third.

In an event held Saturday at the Kelso Country Club in Kelso, Mo., Tyler Elfrink and John Vandevin claimed the top spot. Cori Stoverink and Lester Powell finished second and Terri Rose and Bob Burnett were third.
