Southeast volleyball team wins handily

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Southeast Missouri State University's volleyball team picked up its third straight victory Friday night, routing host Tennessee State 30-22, 30-24, 30-19.

The Otahkians improved to 16-11 overall and 11-3 in Ohio Valley Conference play. The Tigers fell to 13-18 and 0-13.

Sarah Frost led the Otahkians in kills with 16. Emily Johnson added 11.

Suzanne Gundlach paced the defensive effort with 11 digs. Setter Emily Scannell recorded 36 assists and added nine digs.

Rams fall to Charleston in district showdown

Charleston left little double in Friday night's showdown for the Class 2, District 2 title as the Bluejays built a 36-0 halftime lead and routed visiting Scott City 42-7.

The Bluejays improved to 5-5 with their fourth straight win. They'll host Portageville Wednesday in the sectional round of the playoffs. The Rams finished 4-6.

Orrice Stanback, the region's rushing leader, closed in on the 2,000-yard mark as he piled up 206 yards on 22 carries. Stanback scored three touchdowns, on runs of 38, 4 and 2 yards.

Charleston piled up 410 yards of total offense -- 384 on the ground -- and held Scott City to 126 total yards.

The Rams, trailing 42-0, got on the board with late when Luke McClellan hit Matt Schaefer with a 33-yard touchdown pass.

New Salem wins big against Twin City

New Salem Baptist Academy of Marble Hill improved to 2-0 by routing visiting Twin City of Festus 76-34.

David Green led the way with 29 points. Also in double figures were Johnathan Davault with 17 and Josiah Davault with 14.

New Salem led 37-16 at halftime and broke the game open in the second half.--From staff reports
