Cape Girardeau Ford & Sons American Legion continued its fast start Monday with a 14-5 rout of Perryville in the opener of a doubleheader at Capaha Field.

Brad LaBruyere went 2-for-3 and drove in four runs to lead Cape. Alex Shell and Kory Kitchen were 3-for-4 with three RBIs each.

Adam Smithey pitched 4 1/3 innings for the win. Smithey allowed five runs, three earned, with four walks and two strikeouts. Mark Himmelberg kept Ford & Sons in front with one-hit ball in 2 2/3 innings of relief.

Cape held a one-run lead after five innings, but broke things open with an eight-run sixth inning. Kitchen had a bases-clearing double in the inning.

In the second game, Cape won 11-1 in five innings. Cody Tellor pitched four innings for the win and added two hits. Collin Crane led Ford & Sons with three RBIs.

Ford & Sons (6-1) was fresh off a runner-up finish at the Dyersburg (Tenn.) tournament after a 3-2 loss in eight innings in the championship.

"We were really pleased with that," Cape manager Dave Meyr said. "All 10 teams down there were tough. They were basically all-star teams. Overall, we played really well."

Tommy Worley won in the Outlaw 410 sprints over the weekend at the Auto Tire and Parts Racepark in Benton, Mo.

Jeff Hall Jr. was the Modified winner, Cline Myers won the Purestreet and Troy Naeger won in the Sportsman class.

Obergoenner tops field at amateur qualifier

Central graduate and Cape Girardeau native Todd Obergoenner topped the field at the Missouri Amateur Qualifier at Dalhousie Golf Club on Monday with a 2-under-par 70.

James Vernon of Poplar Bluff came in second with a 72. Vernon had a hole in one during his round on No. 13.

Brevin Giebler of Cape Girardeau and Chris Kovach of St. Louis tied for third with 74s.

Cape Senior Babe Ruth wins season opener

Cape Girardeau's Senior Babe Ruth baseball team pounded out 14 hits in a 15-2 win Sunday over Chaffee in its season opener.

Blake Gaddis led Cape with three hits and Jacob Valleroy added two.

Justin Myers struck out nine in four scoreless innings for the win.

Cape is back in action with a home doubleheader against Chaffee on Thursday at Capaha Field.
