Southeast golfers tie for seventh in tourney

Southeast Missouri State University's golf team tied for seventh in the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate hosted by Illinois State Monday and Tuesday. The Indians were 23 shots off the lead.

Southwest Missouri won the tournament with a 7-over 859.

Southeast's Kent Phillips tied for seventh individually with a 2-over 215, six strokes behind winner Marc Cahalan of Northern Iowa, who had a 4-under 209.

Other Southeast scorers were: Jimmy Blose, 222, tied for 39th; Matt Hillis, 224, tied for 49th; Brian Sheehan, 227, tied for 61st; Woody Hill, 229, tied for 63rd.

Scorpions finish third in rugby tournament

The Kohlfeld Scorpions Rugby Club of Cape Girardeau finished third at the St. Louis Royals Tournament last weekend. They went 3-1 in the tournament.

The Scorpions beat the Sunday Morning Rugby Club 17-5 and Little Rock Rugby Club 25-12 before losing to the St. Louis Ramblers 50-15 in the semifinals. Kohlfeld bounced back with a 49-12 win over the St. Louis Royals in the third-place game.

T.J. Ebner led the Scorpions in the tournament with five tries. Eric Hinson had three while Ben Schwab and Scott Johnston had two each. Adding one apiece were Kevin Tucker, Marc Harris, Jimmy Randle and Denny McCaffrey.

The Scorpions practice each Tuesday and Thursday from 5:30-7 p.m. at Arena Park on Hawthorne Road. Anyone interested in playing is encouraged to come to practice, or call Joey Hann at 334-6657 for more information.
