HARRISBURG, Ill. -- Cape Central senior Tatum Kitchen continued his torrid hitting pace Thursday, going 4-for-4 in a 9-6 win over Harrisburg.

Kitchen homered for the second successive game and added a double and three RBIs in the victory. Michael Minner (1-1) pitched four innings for the win, walking no one, as Central improved to 4-1 overall.

Central took a 5-0 lead in the first inning, the big blow coming on Andy Sweet's two-run home run that provided the game's initial runs. Central totaled 10 hits in the game.

Jeff Michel pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief of Minner, allowing two runs as Harrisburg closed the score to 8-6.

With two outs and the tying run on deck in the seventh inning, Central coach Steve Williams went to left-handed ace Craig Ringwald for the final out to end the game.

Central's JV improved to 4-0 with a 7-4 win. Matt Welker got the win and Mark Fisher went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Central travels to Sikeston today for a SEMO Conference game.

Kelly 10, Bloomfield 0

BENTON -- Kelly finished off Bloomfield in five innings Thursday as Denver Stuckey threw an overpowering one-hitter on the mound.

Stuckey struck out 13 and walked only two as the Hawks improved to 2-1.

Ben Klipfel and Jim Hulshof had two of Kelly's eight hits. Klipfel's RBI single ended the game in the bottom of the fifth via the 10-run mercy rule.

"We didn't do anything fancy or spectacular," said Kelly coach Mike Scott. "We just got it over with."

The Hawks play Scott County Central at home today.

Advance 2, Bell City 1

ADVANCE -- Advance's Chris Wallace inherited a one-out, bases-loaded spot in the sixth inning and allowed just one run as the Hornets beat Bell City on Wednesday.

Advance's Dutch Miller drove in a run on a squeeze bunt in the fifth inning and Adam Rainey plated the game-winning run on a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Advance's Derek Broshuis went 6 1/3 innings and struck out 10 batter. Bell City's Justin Davison took the loss.

Advance improved to 2-0, dropping Bell City to 2-1.

GIRLS SOCCER

Cape Central 10, Hillsboro 0

HILLSBORO -- Central led 5-0 at halftime and went on to clobber host Hillsboro. The match on Thursday was stopped with about two minutes to go.

Amber Voerg led Central (4-0) with three goals. The other seven were scored by: Corie Nunnally, Melissa Altenthal, Lorie Bittle, Amanda Hiler, Rachel Hessenkemper, Leslie Wagoner and Ashley Voerg.

Sarah Bruening had two assists. The others were by: Jennifer Daume, Micah Goodrich, Amy Harris, Nunnally, Altenthal and Kim Aslinger.

Harris, who has allowed just one goal this season, earned the shutout in goal. It was her third blanking in four tries.

Central's JV also won 10-0.

Jackson 7, De Soto 0

JACKSON -- Jackson's Julie Wunderlich scored three goals in the first half of Thursday's game against De Soto.

Jennifer Horst, Amanda Beussink, Sarah Schlick and Carrie Myer each added goals in the second half.

Also, Dana Eakins, Jessica Shultz, Myer and Horst each had assists as Jackson improved to 3-1.

Jackson's JV won 6-0.

Poplar Bluff 1, Notre Dame 0

After playing well throughout, Notre Dame allowed Poplar Bluff a goal with about 13 minutes to go and lost on Thursday.

Notre Dame fell to 1-3-1.

Notre Dame's JV also lost 1-0.

GOLF

Cape Central 167, Farmington 174

Central's Bryan Welker shot a 37 as the Tigers beat Farmington and Cape Girardeau Country Club on Thursday.

Also for Central, Dan Groesbeck shot 38, Dane McLaird 43 and Mike Oslund 49.

Tom Conklin led Farmington with a 38.

Jackson 158, Fredericktown 159

FREDERICKTOWN -- Jackson nipped Fredericktown at Fredericktown Country Club on Thursday.

Gabe Estes led Jackson with a 37. Craig Hutson shot 39 and Tom Henderson and Andy Kohl each shot 41.

Kelly 16, Bloomfield 0

BENTON -- Kelly's Brittany Lambert and Marissa Essner combined to strike out every Bloomfield batter as Kelly hammered the Lady Wildcats in a game that was stopped in the third inning.

For Kelly, which won the Missouri Class 2A state championship last fall, Ashley Beggs went 2-for-2 and Andrea Heisserer was 3-for-3.

Leopold 16, Meadow Heights 6

LEOPOLD -- Sarah Gowen pounded two home runs and had six RBIs to help Leopold improve to 2-0 Thursday.

Gowen was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate as Leopold pounded 14 hits. Holly VanGennip added a double, triple and three RBIs and Hanna Jansen clubbed two hits.

Lisa Peters went the distance on the mound for the win, allowing nine hits, nine walks and striking out five.

Leopold plays at Oran today.

Delta 19, East Prairie 13

DELTA -- Mindy Parmer was the winning pitcher as Delta outlasted East Prairie on Thursday.

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Central improved to 4-0 with a tight win over Carbondale on Thursday.

Chaffee boys place 2nd

CHAFFEE -- Charleston's boys and Dexter's girls won a meet in Chaffee on Wednesday.

Charleston totaled 154 points. Chaffee had 100, Dexter 85, Scott City 53, Portageville 52, East Prairie 44 and Oran 24. Individual boys winners from Chaffee were: Andy Obermann (shot put); Phillip Graves (discus); Daren McIntosh (800 run); Andy Proffer (high jump).

Dexter's girls posted 188 points. Charleston had 176, Chaffee 62, Scott City 55.5, Portageville 26.5, Oran 5, East Prairie 2. Tia Hampton won the 1600- and 3200-meter events.

JR. HIGH TRACK & FIELD

Central 8th-grade girls win

STE. GENEVIEVE -- Cape Central's eighth-grade girls team totaled 98.5 points and won its meet on Thursday.

Ste. Genevieve (80.5) was second, Jackson (67) third, Fredericktown (47) fourth and Potosi (5) fifth.

Central's Sylvia Austin won the 100-meter dash, Kim Pancoast won the 1600-meter run and Terra Herzberger won the discus.

Central boys split

NEW MADRID -- Cape Central's eighth-grade boys lost to New Madrid County Central 61-58 and Central's ninth-grade boys beat the hosts 88-50 on Thursday.

In the eighth-grade meet, Central winners were: Arthur Pilsner (1600), Elliot Swoboda (800), Alex Spradling (discus), Kevin Allen (long jump) and Ray Primonato (pole vault). Patrick Dempsey, Cody Hill, David Templeton and Andrew Eaton teamed to win the 4x400.

Central's winners in the ninth-grade meet were: Michael Cox (high hurdles), James Goodman (100), Gabe Austin (800 and 1600), Mark Stone (3200), Otis Turner (shot put), Brad Neels (discus) and Casey Dwyre (pole vault). Terry Sexton, Brian Sides, Aaron Walker and Ross Tighlman teamed to win the 4x400.
