CENTRAL TENNIS TEAM DEFEATS POPLAR BLUFF

POPLAR BLUFF -- The Cape Girardeau Central High tennis squad beat Poplar bluff High 7-2 Thursday.

Winning singles matches for Central, No. 2 Todd Matzat beat Jeremy Booker 8-3; No. 3 David Haycraft beat Todd Richardson 8-5; No. 4 Bryan Daume beat Rob Kerby 8-5; and No. 5 Nick Suhre downed Mike Roach 8-4.

With singles wins for Poplar Bluff, No. 1 Kevin Calich beat Wade Russell 8-5 and No. 6 Rusty Cross downed Andy Exler 8-6.

Central won all three doubles matches. Matzat and Daume defeated Calich and Richardson 9-7; Russell and Haycraft beat Booker and Kearby 8-0; and Suhre and Vijay Dahiya downed Roach and Cross 8-3.

In junior-varsity competition, Central won 5-1.
