CORNING, Ark. -- The Chaffee Red Devils fell to 0-2 after a 40-25 loss to Corning on Friday night.

Chaffee held a 19-14 lead at the half but two quick Corning scores, including a fumble recovery on a lateral pass, erased the Red Devil lead.

Chaffee (0-2) never could recover.

"We went in at halftime and the kids were all excited," Chaffee coach Alan Horrell said. "I think they were so excited they forgot we had a half to go. We couldn't produce anything in the second half. They took over, marched down the field and put it in the end zone."

Chaffee did have a huge night with its passing attack. First-year quarterback Sam Burnett threw for a career-high 238 yards, completing 12-of-15 with three touchdown tosses.

"Sam's doing an outstanding job," Horrell said. "Right now that's our strength and that's what we do best." James Reischman did most of the damage on the receiving end, hauling in three passes for 136 yards.

He scored on all three.

Nick Powderly added four receptions for 62 yards.

"I've got a lot of young kids that are giving me everything they've got right now," Horrell said. "Our receivers have got a knack for getting open and they're not afraid to go across the middle. Most of the receiving corps has been through the wars for a couple of years." Zac Horman led the Red Devils on the ground with 38 yards on 15 carries including a TD run.

Chaffee will play its home opener Friday against Crystal City at 7:30 p.m.

"We've started the year with road trips," Horrell said. "We traveled far for the jamboree, then we went to Grandview and now Northern Arkansas. Next week it's going to be nice to be at home and relax a little bit after school instead of making a dash to get on the road."
