Thirteenth-seeded Chaffee upended the 12th-seed Meadow Heights 65-53 in the consolation bracket on Wednesday.

The early morning game got off to a slow start as a low scoring first quarter produced a 9-4 Chaffee advantage.

However, Chaffee picked up the scoring pace in the second quarter. By halftime, the Red Devils had built a 13-point cushion. Though they were tested in the second half, they never relinquished the lead.

"Today was the first game this year that we've really come out ready to play and prepared to win instead of hoping not to lose," Chaffee coach Tyson Moyers said.

Meadow Heights scored four quick points to begin the second half but Chaffee's Adam Horton nail a 3-pointer to end the Panthers' run. Horton made another important 3-pointer later in the half, when his team's lead had shrunk to just two points with 6 minutes remaining in the game.

"The biggest thing I was proud of was the defense," Moyers said. "Our defensive intensity was better today than it was yesterday, and they rebounded. That was the biggest key to me to win the game was being able to limit [Meadow Heights] to one shot."

Chaffee's Andy Hendrix led all scorers with 20 points while Horton finished with 12.

Meadow Heights was led by Tyler Wagner's 13 points.

Woodland 70, Leopold 50

Woodland, the No. 14 seed, upset 11th-seeded Leopold.

Woodland's Gaines brothers found their stroke after a 4-4 first period and the Cardinals left Leopold behind.

The Gaineses, Seth and Chad, accounted for 35 of the Cardinals' 70 points. Seth, a senior, netted a game-high 21 while younger brother Chad, a sophomore, scored 14.

"They've been our leading scorers," Woodland coach David Mirly said. "Seth can create a shot for himself and create so much for other people, and Chad's on the receiving end of a lot of those."

The Cardinals earned a 32-19 halftime lead that would continue to grow.

"Our defensive intensity was so much better than the first time we played them. The first time we played them they had 50 points at halftime, and today they had 50 at the end of the game," said Mirly. "We limited them to one shot."

Leopold was led in scoring by Eric Fluchel with 18 points and Daren VanGennip with 14.

Jordan King and Josh Hahn also contributed offensively for the Cardinals with 11 and eight points, respectively.

The Blue Jays outscored Central 16-14 in the first quarter, but Central owned the rest of the game.

"When we get to a point where we can put two halves together and have intensity from the jump ball, we have a chance to do some things," Church said, "but right now it seems like we're putting bits and pieces together."

Central had 12 different players put up points in the game. The Tigers were led by Jajuan Bell with 18. George Hamilton had 16 points, while Kerry Walker added 11.
