Chaffee, playing without injured quarterback Peyton Montgomery the entire game, fell behind early and suffered a 43-28 loss to Charleston.

The Red Devils were looking to match the 1956 Chaffee team by going 9-0.

Instead, Chaffee fell to 8-1 as it saw Charleston score on five of its six possessions in the first half for a 30-6 halftime lead.

Senior running back Robert Bogan scored three times and junior Rontavious Clark scored twice in the first half for Charleston (5-4).

The Bluejays had 217 of their 323 yards of total offense in the half.

Meanwhile, Chaffee struggled without Montgomery, who had strained his right shoulder during last week's win against Jefferson and was held out Friday, partly due to limited mobility and partly as a precautionary measure for the upcoming district tournament. Montgomery is expected to play Thursday in the first round of district play.

Charlie Montgomery scored on a 5-yard run in the first half for Chaffee. He added two touchdown runs in the second half and finished with 190 yards on 34 carries.

Jimmy Golden, who replaced Peyton Montgomery at quarterback, added a 2-yard run.

Bogan added a 35-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Delfincko Bogan returned a kickoff 85 yards later in the period to give Charleston a 43-20 lead entering the fourth quarter.
