BASEBALL

Chaffee 2, Oran 0

ORAN, Mo. -- Chaffee scratched out two runs and Oran left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh as the Red Devils beat Oran 2-0 Friday in a game pitting two of the area's best teams.

Matt Stroup, after pitching two innings of relief against Jackson Thursday, pitched a complete-game shutout against the Eagles. He allowed three hits and three walks while striking out 10.

The Eagles (14-5) had the bases loaded with only one out in the seventh inning and the game ended on a controversial call at first base.

"They're the real deal," Chaffee coach Brian Horrell said of Chaffee. "They've been ranked as high as second in the state at one time and they beat a very tough Forsyth team last weekend."

Chaffee (18-2) got the only run it would need in the first when Perry Rice doubled, advanced to third on a Stroup singled, and scored on an RBI single by G.P. Glueck.

The Red Devils scored their other run in the seventh when Jeremy Lynn doubled, Rice singled and Glueck walked to load the bases. Rusty Duncan forced in a run when he drew a walk.

Lynn and Rice each went 2-for-4 with a double.

Adam Friga suffered the loss. He went seven innings and allowed two runs on seven hits and seven walks while striking out five.

"Friga looked good today, though he had a few walks," Horrell said. "He mixes speed so well. If you can mix speeds in high school, you're going to be pretty tough."

After breaking out to the early lead, Central saw Kelly plate a run in the fourth to cut the lead to 3-1. The Tigers answered with the decisive run in the fifth for a 4-1 lead as Kelly tallied two more runs in the sixth.
