Not the same

IN THE Oct. 25 edition, Southeast Missourian sports writer Jeremy Joffray noted in an article that the New Salem Baptist volleyball team was unbeaten and that they would be putting their record up against the best teams in the state during the Missouri Christian School Athletic Association Tournament. I've been to both the MCSAA state tournament and the MHSAA state tournament and to compare the two from a quality level is completely inappropriate. I think a better choice of words would have been appropriate in the article.

Hall of Fame

ON MORE than one occasion, Central High School administrators claimed in this forum that inductions into the Cape Central Athletic Hall of Fame would begin again, this school year. I know a lot of Central alums who are anxious to nominate individuals for consideration as inductees. As a result, I hope that the high school shares with the public ASAP what the plans are for this year, how one goes about nominating candidates and by what process the selections will be made.

(Central athletic director Mark Ruark said last week that a committee has been assembled to help coordinate the Hall of Fame and that more details should be announced this school year.)

First impression

I CAN'T say I'm too impressed with Tony Samuel as a coach. I just hope the Southeast Missouri State football coach knows how to recruit well, because if his roster doesn't improve, then I'm afraid it's Southeast football as usual. Thank heavens basketball season is upon us. I'm looking foward to a positive change in pace.

THE ARTICLE on Oct. 27 about Central's 34-31 victory against West Plains didn't mention that Central ran a play without any time running off the clock with 49.2 seconds remaining in the game. This extra time allowed Central to get in field goal range. Without this extra time, the game would have gone into overtime or West Plains could have scored. Also, this article didn't mention that the kicker didn't make the winning field goal, the official that called roughing the kicker won the game because West Plains didn't rough the kicker. This game should have gone into overtime to determine the winner.

Errors

IN THE story on Central football in Friday's edition, the 45-yard field goal attempt was by Tyler McNabb, not Kevin McNabb. Also, Garrett Stevens' touchdown pass obviously was more than 9 yards. Was your reporter at the game~

(Information provided by the Sikeston Standard Democrat listed the play as a 9-yard scoring play, while an editing error incorrectly identified the kicker. The story also reported that the game was played on Friday, when it obviously was played on Thursday. The Southeast Missourian regrets the errors.

In addition, Friday's edition also had a story that did not have an ending, Thursday's edition had some repeated words in jumps and identified the NHL as soccer.
