PERRYVILLE -- St. Vincent's Justin L'Hote poured in a game high 21 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead the Indians to a 40-36 win over rival Valle Catholic in the first game of the Heartland Hoopfest on Saturday at the Perry Park Center.
However, L'Hote's highlight of the game might not have been his seven field goals, but instead a blocked shot he made on Valle's Casey Koller, who had a breakaway after another teammate stole the ball from L'Hote.
"That felt pretty good," L'Hote said of the blocked shot. "It was pretty exciting. I didn't know I had that much hops in me. But it was a fun game.
"It was probably the first time I had ever done that."
St. Vincent fell behind 11-0 early and did not score its first basket until L'Hote nailed a 3-pointer with approximately 3 minutes, 15 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
That's when L'Hote began to heat up. He added six more points in the final three minutes of that quarter, including another 3-pointer with less than 30 seconds remaining.
L'Hote also continued his solid play in the second quarter with seven points, and hit two free throws to help the Indians take their first lead of the game at 20-19 with 2:27 remaining. He then scored another 3-pointer near the top of the key and the Indians went into the break up 23-19.
L'Hote scored five in the second half to help St. Vincent (1-3) pull away and earn its first victory of the season.
"It's just good to get that first win," L'Hote said. "We've been waiting for it for a couple of weeks now."
