PORTLAND, Ore. -- Nets guard Jason Kidd said his obscene gesture following Wednesday night's loss in Phoenix wasn't directed at the Suns' crowd but toward one fan who taunted him.

Kidd was fined $5,000 by the NBA for making the gesture as he walked into the tunnel following New Jersey's 89-87 loss.

"It was probably something I shouldn't have done, but it was done, and life goes on," Kidd said at shootaround Friday, hours before the Nets' game against the Portland Trail Blazers.

Kidd said a heckler made a "personal" remark about him. Kidd would not reveal any more details about what was said.

Television replays made it seem like Kidd was giving the finger to the Suns' fans, but Kidd said it was only meant for an individual.

"It wasn't directed toward all the fans or anybody," he said. "Somebody had said something when I was leaving the court. So the gesture was for that."

Kidd had a poor game in his first appearance in Phoenix since the Suns traded him to New Jersey for Stephon Marbury last year. Kidd made just 4-of-18 shots as the Nets fell to 0-2 on their road trip. Kidd criticized the franchise when the teams met earlier this year on the East Coast, and the fans booed him constantly Wednesday night.

"Booing doesn't bother me, but if you're going to get personal and out of context, then it becomes personal," Kidd said.

NBA spokesman Tim Frank said the league is further investigating the events on Kidd's behalf.
