By any standard, this was a drubbing.

On the strength of 17 hits in four innings, Cape Girardeau Central High's softball team crushed host Notre Dame 19-0 Thursday.

"Cape Central is the best team we've seen so far," said Notre Dame coach Jerry Grim. "They just hit the ball."

Central, which improved to 7-3, scored three runs in the first inning, two in the second, six in the third and seven in the fourth.

"This was the best we've hit the ball all year," Central coach Don Lang said. "I think the team is starting to come around. We came out in the first inning and hit the ball."

Six Lady Tigers had at least two hits. Michelle Lunsford went 2-for-4, Courtney Haman 3-for-4, Ashlie Voerg 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Erica McDonald 3-for-3 with three RBIs, Amber Voerg 3-for-3 with four RBIs and Dionna Webb 2-for-3.

Pitcher Kathy Michel held Notre Dame to one hit in three innings.

Notre Dame fell to 5-6 as Randi Senciboy took the loss. In 2 1/3 innings, Senciboy allowed 11 runs on 10 hits.

Jackson 10, Goreville 0

GOREVILLE, Ill. -- Jackson pitcher Gretchen King allowed three hits in six innings as the Lady Indians beat Goreville Thursday. King struck out two while gaining the shutout for Jackson (10-3).

The Lady Indians were paced offensively by center fielder Jessica Shultz (2-for-2, two runs) and left fielder Stacey DeClue (2-for-3, two RBIs). DeClue is one of three players starting in place of three Lady Indians starters who are out with injury or illness.

"We've had some bench people who have really stepped up for us," Jackson coach Becky Riney said, "and we've continued to play well."

Perryville 8, Windsor 5

IMPERIAL -- Perryville used the bat and arm of Carrie Preston to improve its season record to 5-1.

Preston notched the win on the mound while supplying two hits and three RBIs at the plate. Preston allowed nine hits, walked two and struck out three.

The Lady Pirates had nine hits, which also included two by Lauren Tucker.

Perryville's JV won 18-0.

Volleyball

SEMO Conference Tournament

CHAFFEE -- Jackson successfully defended its SEMO Conference Tournament title with a 15-4, 15-10 victory over New Madrid in Wednesday's championship match.

Jackson (5-0) swept all three of its matches in the tournament. The Lady Indians, seeded second, topped Scott City 15-5, 15-7 in the first round and rolled past Chaffee 15-5, 15-6 in the semifinals.

New Madrid, seeded third, upset top-seeded Poplar Bluff in the semifinals.

After dropping the first game of the championship match, New Madrid looked like it might force a third game as it jumped out to a 9-1 lead. However, Jackson roared back to score 15 of the next 16 points.

"That says a lot about the girls and their attitude," said Jackson coach Nancy Ellis. "They have a great attitude. I was real pleased with the way they played."

Poplar Bluff finished third, defeating Sikeston in three games.

Bloomfield 15-17, Notre Dame 12-15

Notre Dame fell to 1-3 with its loss to visiting Bloomfield Thursday.

"We're in such a learning stage," said Notre Dame coach Janet Buchheit. "We trying to figure out what everybody's role is."

Notre Dame's JV team won 9-15, 16-14, 15-3.

Perryville 15-15, Kingston 8-0

PERRYVILLE -- Perryville picked up its first win against Kingston Thursday.

The Lady Pirates' Shannon Dreyer had seven assists, Nicole Blechle seven assists, three digs and three kills, Natalie Bohnert four kills and Mandy Kirn three kills. Perryville moved to 1-2.

Perryville's JV team won 15-3, 15-6.

Oran 15-15, Charleston 11-6

ORAN -- Oran won its first match this season, a sweep of visiting Charleston.

Oran's Jenny Brown had eight service aces, Sara Heisserer nine kills and six blocks and Kelly Wheeler 12 assists.

The Lady Eagles moved to 1-2. Oran's JV team also won.

Ste. Genevieve 15-15, St. Vincent

PERRYVILLE -- After a solid first game, St. Vincent dropped the second decisively and lost to Ste. Genevieve Thursday.

St. Vincent dropped to 1-3. Jessica Lakenan had eight kills and eight blocks, Amie Leible seven blocks and Sara Cissell 13 digs.

Cape Central 9, Carbondale 0

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Central improved to 3-0 in dual matches with its sweep of host Carbondale Thursday.

Central's JV squad won 4-1.

Notre Dame 5, Sikeston 0

Leading 2-0 at halftime, Notre Dame tacked on three insurance goals in the second and defeated Sikeston easily Thursday.

Chris Dirnberger scored twice, and Oliver Sanders, Zach Miller and Jason Garner added goals. Sanders and Tommy Wencewicz had assists.

Colin Vandergraaf earned the shutout as the Bulldogs improved to 4-1.

Behind three goals from Timmy Wencewicz, Notre Dame's JV squad won 8-0. Tim Buerck, Shane Kistner, Dustin Klipfel, Grant Medlin and Nathan LeGrand also scored.
