Lady Tigers will play for tourney title at Oakville

OAKVILLE, Mo. -- Cape Central's girls advanced into the finals of the Oakville Tournament with a decisive 42-24 win over the host team Tuesday night.

Shooting a blistering game-total of 65 percent from the field and shutting down its opponent with full-court pressure from the opening tip, the Lady Tigers improved to 2-0.

"We did a good job defensively," said Cape Central coach Sheila Midgett. "Our pressure forced turnovers early."

The Lady Tigers vaulted to a 11-4 first-quarter lead and a 29-16 halftime advantage. They limited Oakville to eight second-half points.

Senior guard Sarah Hyslop and junior forward Alex Wieser shared the scoring lead for Cape Central with 14 points each.

Cape Central will meet Francis Howell for the championship Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

In the JV division of the tournament, Cape Central fell to Oakville 46-33.

Jessi Snell led the Lady Tigers with 16 points.

NOTRE DAME 67

PARK HILLS CENTRAL 24

FARMINGTON, Mo. -- Coming off a stellar 2000-2001 season, Notre Dame picked up where it left off.

The Lady Bulldogs, loaded with talent, had no trouble with Park Hills in the first round of the Farmington Invitational as Notre Dame opened its season.

Notre Dame took a 30-8 halftime lead and never looked back.

Said Notre Dame coach Jerry Grim, "We made our first-game mistakes, but the girls played hard and we shot the ball pretty well."

Notre Dame hit 24-of-51 from two-point range and 4-of-9 from the three-point line.

Deana McCormick led the Lady Bulldogs with 19 points, while Ashley Millham and Lisa Millham had 11 and nine, respectively.

Notre Dame will meet the winner of the Jackson/North County matchup in the semifinals of the eight-team tournament.

ST. VINCENT 49, DELTA 38

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- Chelsey Brown scored 21 points as the Squaws improved to 2-0.

Danielle Schremp added 12 points for St. Vincent.

Rebecca Below netted 16 points for Delta (0-2) while Rebecca Cook had 12.

Delta led 14-13 after one quarter, but St. Vincent outscored the Lady Bobcats in each of the three remaining periods.

WOODLAND 60, RISCO 16

RISCO, Mo. -- Woodland ended a losing streak which spanned almost two years, ripping Risco.

Stacie Greer led Woodland with 15 points, followed by Dianna McCall with 13 and Kandice Abner with 11.

The Lady Cardinals, who went 0-15 last year, led 23-2 in the first quarter and 39-5 at halftime.

"They're rebuilding their program and we're rebuilding ours," said first-year Woodland coach Curtis Finley. "Our kids played hard and I'm happy for them. We're awful young and for many of them, this was their first varsity win."

ORAN TOURNAMENT

ORAN, Mo. -- Host Oran, the fourth seed, moved into the semifinals with a 51-37 win over No. 5 Kelly in the final first-round game.

Oran, playing its season opener, held a commanding 27-16 halftime lead. Ryne Wood scored 15 points for the Eagles and Nathan Seyer added 14. Tyler Schlosser paced Kelly, which was also playing its season opener, with 13 points.

In consolation semifinal action, No. 6 Scott County Central (1-1) downed No. 7 Gideon 71-67. Terrance Williams scored 30 points for the Braves while Chris Pullen had 15. Gideon's Jonathan Bumpus had 19 points.

Oran will play top-seeded Twin Rivers Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the semifinals, followed by the other semifinal between No. 2 Richland and No. 3 Bell City at 8 p.m.

WOODLAND TOURNAMENT

MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Sixth-seeded Meadow Heights (2-0) advanced to the semifinals with a 57-45 victory over No. 3 seed Leopold in the final opening-round game. It was the Panthers' second win over the Wildcats already this season.

The Panthers trailed 28-26 at halftime but outscored Leopold (0-2) 14-9 in the third quarter for a 40-37 lead. Meadow Heights then pulled away in the final period with a 17-8 scoring advantage.

Josh Fulton led the Panthers with 16 points and teammate Josh Mayfield added 15. Leopold got 20 points from Scott VanGennip and 11 from Kevin Holzum.

In a consolation semifinal, No. 4 Oak Ridge slipped past No. 8 Zalma 66-61 in overtime. Jeff Cowan had 23 points for Oak Ridge, followed by Clayton Ruesler with 16 and Zac Ruesler with 15. For Zalma, Chad Wiseman had 23 points and Steven McCain 14.

Meadow Heights will play No. 2 Woodland Thursday at 8 p.m. in the semifinals. The game will be preceded by the other semifinal between No. 1 Advance and No. 5 Delta at 6:30.

FARMINGTON 64, JACKSON 62

FARMINGTON, Mo. -- The Indians failed to hold a fourth-quarter lead as the host team squeezed past them for the win in the first round of the Farmington Tournament. It was Jackson's season opener.

After falling behind by seven in the first quarter, Jackson trailed 36-31 at the half. But a big third quarter in which the Indians outscored the Knights 25-14 sent them into the final stanza with a 56-50 lead.

Jackson coach Mike Kiehne said, "Turnovers killed us in the fourth quarter."

Added Kiehne, "It was the first game and we knew execution was going to be a problem, but we got it under our belt and now we know what we need to work on."

Jackson was led by Seth McDowell with 14 points and Lance Bollinger with 12.

ST. LOUIS -- Cape Central opened its season with a decisive loss to Lafayette.

The Tigers' highest finish was a second-place by diver Cecil Quinn.

"They're a strong team and we learned a lot," said Cape Central coach Dayna Powell.

The Tigers' next meet figures to be just as tough as defending state champion Parkway South visits Friday.

MEHLVILLE, Mo. -- Notre Dame's program began its second season with a win over two St. Louis area teams. Hosted by Oakville, the meet was contested at the Mehville High School pool.

The 12-man squad of eight sophomores, two juniors and two freshmen was led by the first-place finishes of John Fischer in the 200 freestyle, Mark Lester in the 500 freestyle and John Stoverink in diving.

The Bulldogs also captured first-places in the 200- and 400-freestyle relays.
