HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. -- Phil Mickelson showed the maddening and marvelous sides of his game Friday, shooting a 7-under 64 to tie Jack Nicklaus' 36-hole scoring record in the WorldCom Classic.

Mickelson, who began play five strokes behind early second-round leader Justin Leonard, had a 13-under 129 total to match the mark set by Nicklaus in 1975.

Mickelson opened with bogey on the 10th hole, then got that back with birdies on the 11th and 13th holes. He caught Leonard for the lead at 11 under with an eagle on par-5 second hole.

Davis Love III, the first-round leader at 62 was tied at 11-under 131 with Leonard.

Longs Drugs Challenge

LINCOLN, Calif. -- Cristie Kerr, seeking her first LPGA Tour victory, shot an even-par 72 in windy conditions to take a two-stroke lead in the Longs Drugs Challenge.

Mi Hyun Kim shot a 69 -- the only sub-70 round of the day, to join Australia's Jane Crafter (71) at 4-under 140.
