The Cardinals called up relief pitcher Fernando Salas from Class AAA Memphis to replace Motte. Salas, in his fifth stint with St. Louis this season, has struck out nine and walked four in 10 appearances covering 11 2/3 innings. He was 1-0 with a 2.53 ERA at Memphis.

Motte, 28, gave up two earned runs in the eighth inning of a 9-4 loss to Houston on Monday. He entered the game at the start of seventh and did not allow a run but complained of shoulder soreness following the inning. He started the eighth but was unable to record an out.
