It took soccer rivals Notre Dame and Jackson a long time to decide their matchup Wednesday night.

The game was scoreless after 80 minutes of regulation and also after two 10-minute overtime periods.

Both teams converted four of five shots during the first round of penalty kicks, with each goalkeeper making a save.

Notre Dame keeper Thomas Himmelberg stopped Jackson's first shot in the second round of penalty kicks and Ben Wedemeier converted his, allowing the visiting Bulldogs to escape with what is officially a 1-0 victory.

The Bulldogs improved to 11-3 while the Indians fell to 5-7-1.

"It was a typical Jackson-Notre Dame game," Bulldogs coach Brad Wittenborn said. "Both teams played pretty well. I can't find a lot of fault with our play. Their keeper made a really good save in overtime."

Perryville 3, Central 0

Luke Schlichting scored twice as the visiting Pirates continued their strong season.

Kyle Thieret scored Perryville's first goal. Matt Moran dished out two assists and Emilio Mattingly had one assist.

Luke Dobbelare recorded the shutout in the nets for the Pirates, who improved to 11-3 and dropped the Tigers to 8-7.

SOFTBALL

Class 2 District 1

Saxony Lutheran, St. Vincent and Portageville notched first-round wins at Scott City.

Fourth-seeded Saxony beat fifth-seeded Chaffee 9-3, second-seeded St. Vincent crushed No. 7 East Prairie 18-3 in four innings and No. 6 Portageville downed No. 3 Scott City 4-3 in eight innings.

Ashley Steck went 3 for 4 to lead Saxony (7-11). Natalie Schlimpert and Grace Mirly both added two hits. Schlimpert was the winning pitcher.

Chaffee (7-14) was paced by Adrienne Eichhorn as she went 3 for 4.

Amanda Breig went 4 for 5 to pace St. Vincent (10-3), which banged out 17 hits.

Kayla Winkler went 3 for 3 while Jacqueline Richardet, Taylor Kirn and Brett Schario all added two hits. Nicole Pruett notched the victory in the circle.

Scott City committed six errors as it fell to Portageville in extra innings. The Bulldogs pushed across the winning run in the top of the eighth.

"You could tell we were tight and nervous early. We made some bad throws," Scott City coach Amy Pobst said.

Lindsey Rendleman led the Rams (8-11) with two hits, including a triple. Alexis Spriggs allowed two earned runs as she took the loss in the circle.

Today's semifinals will feature top-seeded Kelly against Saxony at 2 p.m. and St. Vincent against Portageville at 4 p.m. The championship will be Friday at 4 p.m.

Second-seeded Notre Dame, which has won eight straight district titles, will play third-seeded North County at 5:30 p.m. today in the semifinals. The championship game will follow at 7 p.m.

Tatum May fired a two-hit shutout as Oran rolled past Winona 10-0 in five innings during its district opener at Poplar Bluff.

Morgan Todt, Anna Jones, Bailey Carlyle and Molly McConnell all had two hits for the Eagles (12-8). Allie Cummins belted a triple.

The third-seeded Eagles will face second-seeded Neelyville at 2 p.m. today in the semifinals. The championship contest willb be at 6 p.m. Friday.

Notre Dame placed fourth at the Spirit Golf Club in Chesterfield, Mo.

Maddie Beussink shot a 15-over-par while Camille Brewer and Amy Blattel each shot 16-over-pars for the Bulldogs. Morgan Schumer shot a 17-over-par.

Beussink, Brewer and Blattel were named to the all-district team. All four Notre Dame girls qualified for the sectional tournament to be held Monday in Eldon, Mo.

Medalist honors were bestowed upon Jordan Wolff of Westminster Christian Academy.

Westminster Christian Academy won the team title with a score of 308, followed by Villa Duchesne (346), MICDS (351) and Notre Dame (352).

VOLLEYBALL

Miranda Fowler had 11 kills as the visiting Bulldogs picked up their 20th win of the season.

Kelsey Luster and Myriah Bernard each had five kills while Taylor Ward dished out 17 assists for Notre Dame (20-1-1). Luster recorded three service aces.

Hailey Clayton recorded 10 kills as the Rams (6-11-1) won on the road.
