MARTIN, Tenn. -- Southeast Missouri State University junior Christine Engelhardt threw a perfect game as the Otahkians split an Ohio Valley Conference doubleheader with Tennessee-Martin on Tuesday.

Southeast moved to 28-8 overall and 11-1 in the OVC.

Engelhardt's perfect game, which came in Southeast's 8-0 win in the opener, was the first of Southeast coach Lana Richmond's 16-year tenure and possibly the first in school history. The Otahkians dropped the nightcap 2-0.

"She definitely had a great game," Richmond said. "She got ahead of the hitters and worked her change well."

The game was called after five innings because of the mercy rule. Engelhardt, from Pinckneyville, Ill., struck out four hitters.

Southeast, which scored three runs in the first inning and five in the second, had six hits. Chris Shetley had a two-run home run and Ricki DeArmon went 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Engelhardt was forced to pitch the nightcap because Southeast's ace, Debbie Schmelz, who leads the conference in wins and ERA, was informed on the way to the game that she has mononucleosis. Richmond said doctors were unsure of the severity of Schmelz's illness and how long she will be out.

"It's a big blow to us," Richmond said.

Engelhardt six innings, allowing six hits while striking out four.

Both of Southeast's hits were from Josie Earnest.
