Class 5 District 1 was shaping up as one of the strongest in the state last week when Rockwood Summit was ranked No. 2 in the state poll and Jackson was No. 3. Both teams suffered their first losses Friday night, though.

While Jackson was getting beat 48-21 by Jefferson City, Rockwood Summit lost a 14-7 decision to Webster Groves.

Eureka remains unbeaten through five games following 63-6 victory against University City.

Homecoming of sorts

When St. Louis University High coach Gary Kornfeld brought his Jr. Billikens to Houck Stadium on Thursday night for a 21-13 victory against Central, he was on familiar ground. Kornfeld -- considered one of the state's leading coach of quarterbacks for producing major college players Steve Schnur, John McArthur and Mark Kornfeld -- played football at Southeast Missouri State University.

"It was good for me to come back here," Kornfeld said. "I'm going home happy with a win."

Glad it's over

Scott City coach Terry Flannigan was in an empty locker room following Friday night's game while some of his players took part in homecoming activities on the field.

He seemed relieved homecoming week and the rivalry game with Chaffee had passed with Scott City still 5-0 following a 47-20 victory.

"This is the type of game you don't know what you're going to get," Flannigan said. "The players deserve to enjoy it. They've had some rough times the last few years, and they worked hard for it."
