Southeast Missouri State freshman Julie Shives was named the Ohio Valley Conference setter of the week for volleyball on Monday.

Shives earned all-tournament honors over the weekend as the Redhawks opened their season by winning the Bradley Kickoff Classic in Peoria, Ill.

Shives totaled 114 assists, 34 digs and seven service aces in the three matches. She recorded two double-doubles and narrowly missed a third.

Shives had 49 assists and 16 digs against host Bradley in the final match of the tournament that gave Southeast the title.

"Julie has a very bright future ahead of her," Southeast coach Renata Heard said. "I look forward to seeing what she can accomplish in her career."

Track hires assistant

Southeast track and field coach Eric Crumpecker recently filled his staff with the addition of Matt Koelling, who will coach the Redhawks jumpers and assist in recruiting, among other duties.

Koelling was a standout at Division II Emporia State, twice finishing in the top 12 at the national meet in the triple jump before completing his eligibility this year.

Koelling spent one year at Kansas as a member of the football team before competing in track at Emporia State.

Gymnasts add to staff

Southeast gymnastics coach Kristi Ewasko recently completed her staff with the hiring of assistant Jessie Kinder. She joins fellow recent hire Will Stokley.

Kinder will serve as the Redhawks' recruiting coordinator, among other duties.

Kinder, a native of Kansas City, Mo., spent last season as a graduate assistant at Oklahoma, her alma mater.

Originally a walk-on, Kinder was a three-year letterwinner for Oklahoma and among the team's top all-arounders. She finished 11th on the floor at the NCAA national meet as a junior and was a two-time all-Big 12 Conference scholar athlete.

"Jess began her collegiate career as a walk-on who later earned a scholarship. She has a true understanding of hard work and determination," Ewasko said in a release.
