The Southeast Missouri State volleyball team continued its strong early-season play by going 2-1 over the weekend at the Saint Louis University tournament.

Southeast opened the tournament Friday with a 25-19, 24-26, 20-25, 25-22, 15-9 comeback win over South Florida.

The Redhawks then split two matches Saturday, losing to host Saint Louis 25-19, 19-25, 25-22, 26-24 before bouncing back to sweep Evansville 25-9, 26-24, 25-11.

Friday's victory over South Florida marked Southeast's (6-4) first triumph over a Big East Conference squad since 1998. Southeast also owns a win over Big 10 Conference member Iowa this season.

"It was a big win for us, we showed a lot of senior leadership in a tough deficit," Southeast coach Julie Folliard said.

Brittney Kalinoski had a season-high 16 kills to go along with a career-high 16 digs against South Florida. She added four blocks.

Emily Coon, Colleen Yarber and Kelsey Keeve all had 10 kills. Coon added six blocks.

Setter Julie Shives posted 41 assists and 16 digs.

Berkley Idel recorded 22 digs while Samantha Lowman added 14. Taylor Masterson had five blocks.

Kalinoski again led the way against Saint Louis with another double-double of 15 kills and 11 digs.

Yarber (10 kills, 14 digs) and Shives (34 assists, 13 digs) also recorded double-doubles.

Idel led in digs with 15. Coon recorded eight blocks.

Yarber posted a double-double against Evansville with 14 kills and 12 digs.

Coon added 12 kills. Kalinoski led in digs with 15, followed by Idel and Lowman with 14 apiece. Shives recorded 36 assists.

The Redhawks return to action Tuesday, visiting SIU Carbondale for a 7 p.m. match.

Soccer

Southeast concluded a stretch of three straight road games with Saturday's 4-0 loss at Nebraska that marked the Redhawks' third consecutive shutout defeat.

The Redhawks (1-5-1), whose other losses during the streak were against Kentucky and nationally ranked Louisville, had not been held scoreless in three consecutive games since early during the 2008 season.

Southeast was outshot 30-1 but held Nebraska (3-4) scoreless for the first 50 minutes before the Cornhuskers exploded for four goals in a span of less than 23 minutes.

Ashton Aubuchon was credited with a career-high 13 saves in the nets for the Redhawks.

Southeast returns to action Tuesday, hosting Evansville at 6:30 p.m.

Noteworthy

September is National Youth Soccer Month, and Southeast is offering several perks to area youth soccer players.

Youth soccer players will receive free admission to all five Southeast soccer games this month when they wear their soccer jerseys.

Tuesday and Sept. 21 are Club Team Night and Rec Team Night, respectively. Area club and rec teams will be recognized, the groups will form a pre-game, high-five tunnel and participate in a team parade on the field. Redhawk players will be signing autographs after both contests.

On Sept. 23, adults who attended the Southeast Sept. 22 football game against Tennessee Tech get free admission by presenting their ticket stub at the gate. Southeast is offering a free youth clinic after its Sept. 30 game.
