Southeast Missouri State University's women's tennis team enters the fall season with high hopes of building momentum for a strong spring performance.

The Otahkians will compete in the Saint Louis University Tournament today and Saturday, one of three fall tournaments for the squad. Southeast will also have one dual match in the fall, hosting Harding on Nov. 3.

"Hopefully we can use the fall schedule to build into the spring season," said Southeast coach Donna Ryan.

Ryan was the Otahkians' interim coach last spring when they went 6-8 and finished sixth in the Ohio Valley Conference. She has since had the interim tag removed as she was named Southeast's coach in August.

"The girls have been working hard and we're looking forward to getting started," said Ryan. "We're definitely hoping to move up in the OVC this spring."

Southeast returns every player from last year's squad except one, Vicky Wood, who is now serving as the Otahkians' student assistant coach.

Returning are last season's top two players, senior Izabela Slowikowska and junior Thais Olive.

Also back are sophomore Mel Thomas, who missed the entire spring with an elbow injury that required surgery; senior Brigitte Stoter; and senior Michelle Gruber.

"Those girls are looking solid and we're really pleased with our top five," Ryan said. "We're extremely happy to have Mel Thomas back."

Ryan said the Otahkians are looking to fill the sixth spot. Senior Beth Doerr, who has been both a player and manger in the past, will get a look there, as will some walkons.
