The Southeast Missouri State gymnastics team closed out its home schedule with a bang.

Southeast won Saturday's Midwest Independent Conference Championships at Houck Field House, finishing with a score of 193.775.

Defending champion Texas Woman's University was second with a 192.525, followed by Illinois-Chicago (192.075), Illinois State (191.900) and Centenary (189.850).

The Redhawks won all five individual titles to claim just their second MIC crown.

"We're really excited," Southeast coach Kristi Ewasko said. "The team trained really hard this year, and this was one of our goals -- to bring the MIC title back to Cape Girardeau.

"There are some really tough teams in our conference. Texas Woman's, Illinois-Chicago, those are programs on our heels every year. Winning every event. ... It was a very strong showing for our athletes."

Two Southeast seniors led the way.

Brianna Gaddie was first on vault (9.900) and on floor (9.750).

It was Gaddie's seventh vault title this season. She has six floor titles and 19 in her career. She also tied for fifth on beam (9.700).

Christina Sundgren claimed the bars title with a career-best 9.900. It was her sixth bars title of the season and 14th of her career.

Sundgren also captured her third straight all-around title (38.875), tied for fifth on beam (9.700) and was named MIC senior gymnast of the year during post-meet ceremonies.

"Brianna and Christina really did their jobs," Ewasko said. "Winning the all-around is huge, and so is winning senior gymnast of the year."

Southeast's Jessie Kinder was named co-MIC assistant coach of the year.

The Redhawks' other title was by sophomore Taylor Westrick on beam, tying a career-best with a 9.875. It was her fifth beam title of the season.

"She stepped up," Ewasko said.

Westrick also was fourth in the all-around (38.175).

Southeast had several other top-five performances.

Sophomore Emma Garrett tied for third on floor (9.675) and tied for fourth on vault with a 9.800 that matched her career high.

The Redhawks were especially strong on beam.

In addition to the title by Westrick, and Gaddie and Sundgren tying for fifth, sophomores Sarah Brillhart and Angela Serafini deadlocked for third (9.725).

"We had so many strong performances," Ewasko said.

About the only negative to the meet was that Ewasko doesn't believe the Redhawks' score was high enough to lift them in the national rankings and earn them a berth in next month's NCAA South Central Regional.

The top 36 squads across the nation qualify for regional competition based purely on scores.

Southeast entered the weekend 37th with a regional qualifying score of 193.875, just behind No. 36 Arizona State (193.900). Regional berths will be announced Monday.

"It's going to be close, but it doesn't look like we're going to make it," Ewasko said.

Ewasko said Gaddie, Sundgren and Westrick are all likely to qualify individually if the Redhawks don't make the regional as a unit.

"That would be a huge accomplishment," Ewaskso said.
