Southeast Missouri State, bolstered by its usual strong showing in track & field, had its best-ever finish in the Ohio Valley Conference Commissioner's Cup.
The league office announced Tuesday that Southeast placed third for the 2012-13 school year. Southeast's previous highest OVC Commissioner's Cup finish was fifth.
Southeast accumulated 104.25 points. Eastern Illinois (124 points) won the award, which is a symbol of overall athletic excellence in conference-sponsored championships.
Eastern Kentucky (121 points) took second, with Southeast finishing just ahead of Belmont (103 points).
Murray State (98.6), Jacksonville State (92.5), Austin Peay (90), SIU Edwardsville (81.5), Tennessee Tech (81), Morehead State (79.3), Tennessee-Martin (77.2) and Tennessee State (74.5 points) rounded out the standings.
Southeast was led by a first-place finish in women's indoor track & field, second-place finishes in both men's indoor and outdoor track & field, a second place in volleyball (winners of West Division), a third place in women's outdoor track & field and a third place in men's cross country.
Under the scoring system, schools are required to count point totals for four main sports (football, volleyball, men's basketball and women's basketball) along with their next eight highest point totals from the remaining sports, regardless of gender.
