When Southeast Missouri State junior receiver Paul McRoberts caught the game-winning touchdown pass with 4.6 seconds remaining in the Redhawks' 24-23 upset win over nationally-ranked Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday, he did so with an injured foot.
The Ohio Valley Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week McRoberts injured his foot during the third quarter, and it turned out to be a Lisfranc fracture in his right foot.
McRoberts briefly left the game in the third quarter and was treated for cramps, but he was not treated for the foot injury at that time.
Sophomore defensive end Selwyn Carrol suffered the same injury during the first half of the game and was in a walking boot at practice Tuesday while McRoberts sported a pink cast.
Southeast coach Tom Matukewicz said there is no definite timetable for a return.
"It's a significant amount," Matukewicz said. "It could be four weeks. It could be eight."
In 2-3 weeks, an X-ray will be taken again to see where the players are at in the healing process.
"It's just like we say on everything: It's a great opportunity for some young kid that maybe no one even knows about to step up," Matukewicz said. "As a coach it's fun -- let's find a way to win a game, just like we did last week and like we'll have to do in two weeks. That looks different every single week. You try to put the best 11 players out there and prepare them for a football game and find a way to win whether it's 61-60 or 10-0."
McRoberts leads the Football Championship Subdivision with six receiving touchdowns and ranks 12th in the FCS with 364 receiving yards.
Freshman receiver Adrian Davis is listed as the No. 2 wide receiver X behind McRoberts on the depth chart. Receivers Spencer Davis, Peter Lloyd, Mike Cylliax, Tyler McClemore, Michael Ford and tight end Ron Coleman could fill in for the injured McRoberts, Matukewicz said.
"All those guys played today and we'll let the film dicate, so after Wednesday we'll set that depth chart based on what that film looks like," Matukewicz said.
Carrol has recorded 10 tackles and two sacks in the first four games of the season.
Carrol had replaced junior defensive end Travis Sanders, who has a back injury, in the starting lineup. Sophomore Austin Black is listed as the No. 1 defensive end on the depth chart. Black sat out the first game of the season and has been recovering from a back injury.
Southeast will open Ohio Valley Conference play on the road against UT-Martin at 6 p.m. Saturday.
"There will not be an excuse," Matukewicz said. "I would not trade them teams. If he [UT Martin coach Jason Simpson] called and said, 'Switch me teams,' I'd say 'No way.'Let's go. We're not making any excuses. We're going to prepare our football team and we expect to play well."
