Notre Dame's Jack Litzelfelner continued his strong freshman season by claiming the medalist honor at the Jackson Invitational last week at Kimbeland Country Club.

Litzelfelner was among three players that birdied the 18th hole to finish in a three-way tie at 1-under-par 70. He then carded pars on two playoff holes to outlast teammate Brady Dixon and Jackson's Eli Pike.

It was the first outright major tournament title this season for Litzelfelner, who was the co-medalist a week earlier at the Poplar Bluff Invitational. Both tournaments were won by Notre Dame, which has gone unbeaten since losing its own tournament by one stroke.

"We really didn't like that," Litzelfelner said about the narrow loss in the Notre Dame Invitational. "We came out hot after losing."

Litzelfelner is an accomplished junior player who has stood tall during his first year of high school golf despite giving away age, height and pounds to the competition.

"I think it's just his knowledge of the game," Notre Dame coach Jerry Grim said about his precocious 5-foot-3, 125-pound freshman. "He's a smart player, and he strikes the ball well. To be no bigger than he is, he really strikes the ball well."

Litzelfelner had six birdies, seven pars and five bogeys in his round at Kimbeland.

Two days later he again claimed the medalist honor in a dual victory over rival Central, shooting a 1-over 73 at Dalhousie Golf Club.

"He doesn't get himself in trouble," Grim said. "He's a smart kid."
