~ The Redhawks baseball player is one of six athletes in the OVC to earn the Scholar-Athlete Award.

Southeast Missouri State baseball player Matt Carter has been selected as one of six individuals to receive the Ohio Valley Conference's prestigious Scholar-Athlete Award for 2006-07.

The award is the highest individual honor that can be earned by OVC student-athletes, and is given annually to three male and three female juniors or seniors for their accomplishments in both the classroom and athletic arena, and because of their leadership qualities.

Carter, along with the other five winners, was selected from a group of 17 finalists by a vote of OVC Faculty Athletics Representatives. Honorees must have performed athletically with distinction, earned at least a 3.25 grade point average and conducted themselves in a manner which has brought credit to the student-athlete, his or her institution, intercollegiate athletics and the OVC.

Carter has a 3.774 GPA in sport management with a minor in business. The senior right-handed relief pitcher has been a three-year letterwinner for the Southeast baseball team, compiling a 1-2 record in 41 2/3 innings of work.

Carter, a native of Carlinville, Ill., is a three-time Southeast Scholar-Athlete who has also been named to the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll as well as to the National Dean's List and Collegiate All-American Scholar team.

In addition, Carter is currently serving as president of Southeast's Student-Athlete Advisory Council, and he is the OVC's representative at the national level for that organization.

The other OVC Scholar-Athlete winners are Austin Peay's Adonia Bivins (soccer); Murray State's Anna Lask (tennis) and Jeffrey Lester (tennis); and Morehead State's Lindy Nettleton (rifle) and Steven Thieme (track/cross country).

Southeast senior soccer player Jessi Wuellner also was a nominee for the award.
