* Kerry Wood's sore right shoulder will force him to miss at least one start after he left his last two outings early because of pain, according to the Chicago Cubs.

Wood was slated for tests Monday to see if the bursitis that affected him during most of spring training was the cause of the pain. The Cubs said results from the tests would not be available until today, when Chicago opens a series in Milwaukee.

Basketball

* Pistons center Ben Wallace won the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year award for the third time in four years Monday.

Wallace, who was presented with the award at an afternoon news conference, joins Dikembe Mutombo as the only two players to win the award three or more times.

During the regular season, he ranked fifth with 2.38 blocks per game, second with 12.2 rebounds a game and 23rd with 1.43 steals a game.

Hockey

* The NHL and the players' association will hold the next round of labor talks Thursday and Friday, several sources close to the negotiations told The Associated Press on Monday.

The first bargaining sessions since April 19 will take place in Toronto, the sources said on condition of anonymity. The league and the union have met five times since commissioner Gary Bettman canceled the entire 2004-05 season on Feb. 16.

Tennis

Top-seeded Andy Roddick sharpened his clay-court game Monday, defeating Greg Rusedski 6-4, 6-2 in the first round of the Italian Open.

Sixth-seeded Andre Agassi, winner of the Rome title in 2002, beat wild card Alessio Di Mauro of Italy 7-5, 6-2 while 2002 French Open champion Albert Costa of Spain eliminated countryman Albert Montanes 6-4, 6-4.

Agassi, who turned 35 on Friday, is seeking his first title of the year. He has not won since capturing his lone title of 2004 at the Cincinnati Masters in August.
