CENTRAL GIRLS' TRACK TEAM WINS BIG MEET

Cape Girardeau Central High School's girls' track team won Saturday's Washington University Invitational for the second straight year. The meet featured more than 35 squads.

The Tigers got first-place finishes from Vicki Wilson in the 100 meters, Jennifer Pancoast in the 800 and the 3,200 relay team of Pancoast, Whitney Pingel, Holly Schaffer and Rachel Sprigg.

On the boys' side, Central's top finishes were second places by Chris Smith in the shot put and Jeremiah Dukes in the triple jump.

Baseball

Placido Polanco had three hits and an RBI, lifting his spring training batting average above .400, as the St. Louis Cardinals tied the Los Angeles Dodgers 1-1 in 10 innings in an exhibition game in Jupiter, Fla.

Cardinals starter Garrett Stephenson allowed one run on six hits in five innings, with a strikeout and two walks.

Andy Ashby allowed one run on four hits with a strikeout in five innings for Los Angeles.

Tennis

One game from defeat, top-ranked Jennifer Capriati overcame an erratic serve and rallied to beat Russian Anastasia Myskina 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the third round of the Nasdaq-100 Open in Key Biscayne, Fla.

Two other top women had a much easier time. No. 3-seeded Martina Hingis lost only five points in the opening set and routed Tatiana Poutchek 6-0, 6-1 in 41 minutes. No. 8-seeded Serena Williams needed just 46 minutes to beat Katarina Srebotnik 6-1, 6-0.

In men's play, No. 9 Andre Agassi beat Augustin Calleri 6-3, 6-2.

Colleges

At Hutchinson, Kan., a late basket by Wes Edwards capped a second-half comeback Saturday night that gave Dixie State, Utah, the men's national junior college basketball championship with an 82-81 victory over Coffeyville, Kan.

Dixie State finished 34-3.

Earlier, Javon Clark and Mike Williams scored 21 points each as Schoolcraft, Mich., beat Wabash Valley, Ill., 111-86 for third place.

Derek Wiley scored 25 points as Moberly, Mo., beat Southern Union, Ala., 87-82 for fifth place.
