In only its third year of existence, the Cape Central girls soccer program continues to gain respect around the state.

After completing its second successive undefeated regular season, three Lady Tigers were recently named Show-Me State Girls Soccer All-State Selections.

Senior Amy Harris and freshmen twins Ashlie and Amber Voerg were named to the all-state team, which was selected by the state's high school soccer coaches. Harris, Central's starting goalie all three years, earned first team honors. The Voerg twins were selected as honorable mentions.

If these three names sound familiar, it might be because all three were also named to last fall's all-state softball team.

"All three made all-state in softball so obviously we're talking about some good athletes here," said Central soccer coach Tom Doyle.

With 15 shutouts to her credit, Harris was a stonewall in goal for the Lady Tigers as they compiled a 20-1-1 mark this season. After allowing just four goals last season, Central allowed only 10 goals this season.

"Being named to the first team basically means Amy was the No. 1 goalkeeper in the state," Doyle said. "This honor is richly deserved. She did a super job for us over her career."

Over the last two seasons, the Lady Tigers compiled a 38-2-1 record with the two losses coming to the eventual state champions in the first round of the state playoffs.

Despite her all-state status in two other sports, Harris is headed to Mineral Area College in Park Hills to play basketball.

With three more years of high school left, Doyle has got to be happy the Voerg twins aren't going anywhere soon.

In just her first year of varsity athletics, Amber broke Central's single-season scoring record set by Nichole Thiele in 1997 with 26 goals this season.

"And she could have scored considerably more than that," said Doyle. "I'd normally pull her out once she scored three goals or we got a big lead."

Ashlie didn't post the big numbers of her sister, but she was instrumental in keeping Central's opponents off the scoreboard from her sweeper position. Doyle gave Ashlie a lot of credit for Harris' sparkling goalkeeping numbers.

"Not to take anything away from Amy, but she didn't have many good saves because Ashlie kind of took charge back there and made it easy on Amy," Doyle said. "Ashlie and Amber both came in and started as freshmen on a good team; that's admirable."
