CHAFFEE, Mo. -- The top-seeded Oran girls basketball team had no trouble in its Scott-Mississippi Conference Tournament opener, defeating eighth-seeded Scott City 83-20 on Tuesday at Chaffee High School.
Freshman Leah Cauble scored 27 first-half points for the Eagles, finishing with a game-high 37. She also had seven assists and shot 16 of 23 (70 percent) from the floor, including 4 of 9 (44 percent) from beyond the arc.
Oran (10-1) led 47-10 at halftime and outscored the Rams 23-2 in the third quarter to build a 70-12 lead heading into the final period.
Freshman Jessie Long added 10 points and eight steals for the Eagles, who shot 36 of 64 (56 percent) from the field. Junior Brianna Stause added 18 points for Oran, shooting 7 of 12 (58 percent) from the floor.
Bella Bowers scored eight points, all in the second half, to lead Scott City (1-8).
The Eagles return to action at 6:30 p.m. today with a semifinal matchup against fourth-seeded Charleston. The Bluejays defeated No. 5 Kelly 62-37 in a quarterfinal on Monday.
The winner will take on either No. 2 Scott County Central or No. 3 Chaffee in the championship game at 7:45 p.m. Thursday.
