Kyle Yount breaking a major career record and the return of Shawn Pemberton figure to highlight Southeast Missouri State University's weekend baseball series.

The Indians will entertain Belmont from Nashville, Tenn., in a three-game, non-conference set at Capaha Field. There will be a 1 p.m. doubleheader today and a 1 p.m. single game Sunday.

Yount, Southeast's senior second baseman from Caledonia Valley High School, needs just one hit to become the school's all-time leader in that category.

With 183 career hits, Yount is tied with former Southeast standout Tom Breuer for the top spot.

"Kyle has had an outstanding four-year career for us and he's very deserving of this record," said Southeast coach Mark Hogan.

The son of a former Southeast baseball player -- Steve Yount was a three-year starter for the Indians -- Yount has had an impressive college career as he stepped into the starting lineup during his freshman season.

Yount batted a solid .270 during his rookie campaign. He hit .302 as a sophomore and then .351 last year as he started every game for the Indians.

A four-time Southeast Scholar Athlete and a member of the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll, Yount has raised his average to .275 this season after something of a slow start. He's started every one of the Indians' 29 games in 1999.

"Kyle has been such a big part of our program," Hogan said. "He's not only an exceptional baseball player but a great student and a fine young man."

Another major career record could also fall this weekend as junior center fielder Jeremy Johnson -- the Indians' leading hitter at .404 -- needs to score four more runs in order to break the record of 127 held by ex-Southeast star Steve Williams, currently the head baseball coach at Cape Central High School.

Earlier this season, Johnson broke the school's career doubles record previously held by Breuer. Johnson has 46 doubles while Breuer had 41.

Meanwhile, Pemberton is a former Cape Central standout who spent two seasons at Southeast before transferring to Belmont.

One of the top players for the Capahas summer team the past few years, the senior catcher was batting .346 through the start of the week, which ranks third on the Belmont squad.

Belmont, coached by former Three Rivers Community College head coach and Murray State assistant Dave Jarvis, had a 19-13 record through the start of the week.

Southeast, taking an unusual weekend break from Ohio Valley Conference play, is 12-17 after Wednesday's tough 6-5, 11-inning loss at Southern Illinois.

The Indians, at 4-4, are tied for fifth place in the nine-team OVC. Austin Peay leads the way at 7-1, with Murray State second at 6-3. Eastern Kentucky and Eastern Illinois are tied for third at 5-4, with Southeast right behind that duo, along with 3-3 Middle Tennessee.

OVC series this weekend feature Middle Tennessee at Austin Peay, Eastern Kentucky at Murray State, Morehead State at Eastern Illinois and Tennessee Tech at Tennessee-Martin.
