Area Methodist churches to hold joint services

St. Paul United Methodist Church of Commerce, Mo., and Broadway United Methodist Church of Scott City will hold a joint worship service at 10:30 a.m. March 9.

The service will be a dedication for a new cross on the hillside at the St. Paul church, built as an Eagle Scout project by Michael Painton. Bishop Ann B. Scherer will visit the two congregations for the dedication service.

A potluck meal will follow the service.

Celebration of Lutheran Schools Week planned

Dr. Steven Wente will perform "I Too Shall Praise You," an organ recital in honor of Lutheran Schools Week and Saxony Lutheran High School.

The performance will be at 2 p.m. March 9 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau. There is no admission charge.

Wente is a professor of music at Concordia University in River Forest, Ill.

As part of the celebration, the choral group Kapelle from Concordia University will present at concert at 7:15 p.m. March 8 at Trinity Lutheran Church.

Former pro athlete to speak at area schools

Jeff Markland, a former player for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins, will visit area schools this week as part of a Sports World Ministries program in the region. The event is being sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Christian Businessmen's organization.

Markland will speak to students at Notre Dame Regional High School, Central middle and junior high schools, Nell Holcomb school, Perryville middle and high schools, and Anna-Jonesboro middle and high schools in Southern Illinois.

Beginning Experience to sponsor seminar on loss

Beginning Experience of Cape Girardeau will sponsor a weekend seminar March 28 to 30 at the DePaul Center on the grounds of St. Vincent de Paul Church in Cape Girardeau.

The cost is $75 and includes five meals and two nights' lodging.

The seminar is designed for anyone who has suffered the loss of a loved one through death, divorce or separation. Though rooted in Catholic traditions, the seminar is open to all denominations.

Saturday Night Alive! service set in Scott City

Illmo Baptist Church in Scott City will host Saturday Night Alive!, a contemporary praise service at 6:30 p.m. March 8. Guests will be the youth praise band Not Ashamed and the One Accord praise team, both of Covenant Christian Center in Fruitland. Child care is available for children age 3 and younger.
