Two year old Sharona, a perpetual kitten, likes the sound of the printer and will come running from anywhere in the house once it's turned on. Owner of a coveted remote controlled car, Sharona enjoys the interaction of family members and friends when they choose to give it a whirl. Dog reputations are threatened when Sharona takes to chasing the car.

Family center begins food program for needy

The Cape Area Family Resource Center recently began participating in the Missouri Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP). This program works to improve the health of low-income pregnant and breastfeeding women, other new mothers up to one year postpartum, infants, children up to their sixth birthday, and older persons at least 60 years of age by supplementing their diets with nutritious USDA commodity foods.

Eligible recipients must be Missouri residents. Women, infants and children must meet income eligibility requirements, currently 185 percent of the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines. Older persons must have income at or below 130 percent of the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines, currently $14,625 for a family of two. Eligibiliity must be determined and approved every six months.

The Family Resource Center is able to help 100 households in Cape Girardeau. They are accepting applications for the April distribution until the end of March. Applications can be picked up at the Cape Area Family Resource Center at 1202 S. Sprigg. Applicants must provide an I.D. with current address and a drivers license or birth certificate. Proof of age is required for infants, children, and older persons.

Demonstration of living history at Pilot Knob

Volunteers portraying Civil War soldiers will give demonstrations starting at 8 a.m. March 22 at Fort Davidson State Historic Site in Pilot Knob, Mo., sponsored by the Friends of Fort Davidson, a non-profit group that helps interpret history.

Artillery and small arms drills will follow, along with ongoing displays of Civil War artifacts. Antique appraisals will take place from noon to 3 p.m. Reenactors and friends of Fort Davidson will give a theatrical performance at 7 p.m. Music, civilian craft demonstrations and several new artifacts on display in the museum round out the day. This is a scaled down version of the major reenactment held every three years at the battlefield. For more information call (573) 546-3454.

Orientation, dance for Parents Without Partners

Parents Without Partners has several events planned this week.

Orientation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Dairy Queen, near Schnucks. Open to the public. Call 335-0797.

A singles dance, from 8 p.m. to midnight, will be held Saturday at the VFW Hall in Cape Girardeau, attended by Parents Without Partners. Music will be provided by "Charlie's Review Sound System." Open to the public. Parents Without Partners will attend line dance lessons at Circle S. Saddle from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Civil War Round Table to meet Sunday

The Cape Girardeau County Chapter of the Civil War Round Table will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Fellowship Room, Hanover Lutheran Church, 2949 Perryville Rd. in Cape Girardeau.

The program speaker will be history student Anthony Fleege, who will speak on "The Art of Embalming: Civil War Origins." Fleege teaches mortuary science courses at SIU Carbondale and has worked extensively in the funeral business.

Library presents young adult program

Beginning at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Riverside Regional Library in Jackson will present book talks, crafts and refreshments. Young adults should bring their favorite book to share with the group.
