Cape Girardeau Zone Election Committee could meet as early as this week to draw final boundary lines for new wards; citizens committee was formed last year to sort out legal questions surrounding implementation of ward council representation, measure voters approved last November.

Dongola, Ill. -- During heavy downpour Monday afternoon, chemical cleanup experts from Hulchers Railroad Salvage Co. of Virden, Ill., completed job of pumping 30,000 gallons of flammable vinyl chloride from overturned tank car into another tanker on side rail; tension filled air in nearly deserted town for five and half hours as transfer took place.

Scott City -- First-grade pupil who darted under wheels of school bus to retrieve some papers was fatally injured yesterday afternoon; Michele A. Hanner, 6, was daughter of Mrs. Jackie Huckstep and step-daughter of Jerry Huckstep of Scott City.

St. Louis -- Complete plan of flood protection for Cape Girardeau has been recommended by St. Louis District of Corps of Engineers in definite project report to be submitted to Maj. Gen. S.D. Sturgis Jr., chief of engineers; approximately four miles of riverfront levee, topped in places by 7-foot high parapet wall with flank levees running along both sides of Sloan and Cape La Croix creeks, are planned by engineers.

New state Class B basketball champion is crowned; John Burroughs Bombers turn trick on Puxico High Indians, 73-65, at Houck Field House, to prevent Braves from copping their third straight Missouri title.

75 years ago: March 14, 1928

Benton -- Attempted jail break, in which 10 prisoners are alleged to have participated, is frustrated in morning by Mrs. E.A. Dye, wife of Scott County sheriff, who gives alarm after she hears prisoners at work in jail; she calls her son, Dale, who is deputy, and who with two special officers find that prisoners had worked their way through their cells and were attempting to break through ceiling of "bull pen."

Semi-annual meeting of 14th District of American Legion Auxiliary is being held in Cape Girardeau; delegates representing various auxiliary chapters of district are in attendance, besides number of state officers and executives from other districts; meeting is being held at Legion Hall.
