ST. LOUIS -- The Blues' dream of winning the Central Division was kept alive, thanks to Pavol Demitra.

Demitra scored twice, including the winning goal 2:22 into overtime, in the Blues' 3-2 victory over the Anaheim Mighty Ducks on Thursday night.

"That was one of my better goals," Demitra said of the game-winner. "I was just looking for an opening and I found one."

The Blues felt they needed to get a win to maintain a chance to catch Detroit for first place in the Central Division.

"We had to have the two," Blues coach Joel Quenneville said. "Still, a lot of good things have to happen for us to have a chance."

Anaheim would've liked to have had a win, but were partly satisfied with a point.

"Every point is critical for us right now," Anaheim's Keith Carney said. "It is unfortunate for us not to get two points after we put ourselves behind early."

Doug Weight also had a goal and Chris Osgood made 24 saves to improve to 3-0 with St. Louis, which has won six straight at home.

"I figured if I could keep it at two, we were going to get another one," Osgood said. "I just tried to focus."

Adam Oates and Steve Thomas scored for Anaheim, which set a franchise record with its 86th point of the season. The previous record of 85 was set in the 1996-97 season.

Weight scored his 13th goal at 3:53 of the first period to give St. Louis a 1-0 lead. Carney was in the penalty box and Weight beat Martin Gerber with a wrist shot.

Demitra scored his 31st at 14:33 to give St. Louis a 2-0 lead when he took a centering pass from Scott Mellanby and beat Gerber from close range.

"I never saw it," Gerber said of Demitra's first goal. "Sometimes you have luck and sometimes you don't. Tonight, I didn't."

Oates cut St. Louis' lead to 2-1 at 1:15 of the second when he took a pass from Steve Rucchin and beat Osgood for a power-play goal. It was just the second power-play goal in Anaheim's last 33 opportunities.

Anaheim tied it at 11:50 of the second when Thomas gloved a clearing attempt by Blues defenseman Al MacInnis and beat Osgood.

"When we tied it at two, I thought we would win because Gerbs has been automatic for us," Anaheim coach Mike Babcock said. "It's been very rare that he has given up more than two goals, but he had a couple of tough breaks tonight."

The three goals allowed by Gerber snapped a string of 10 games where he had allowed two or less goals.
