The Central Tigers boys baseball team banged out 14 hits and received solid pitching from starter John Thies and went on to defeat CBC 9-3 Monday at Washington University in the team's season opener.

"We got some real good pitching," Central coach Steve Williams said. "Thies was very good today."

The Tigers got three hits apiece from Seth Hudson and Colin Schermann. Aaron Dohogne and Patrick Slattery each had two hits. Hudson, Dohogne and Josh Ford had two RBIs apiece.

On the mound Thies went 5 2/3 innings for the win. Thies allowed two earned runs on seven hits. Jake Welch pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to seal the win.

"We played really well today," Williams said. "We haven't had too many wins up there."

Woodland 13, Richland 0

Senior Dillon Yount came within two outs of a no-hitter as the visiting Cardinals shut out Richland on the road.

Yount struck out nine batters and allowed only one hit. Luke Johnson picked up a pair of doubles to help drive the Cardinals offense. Alex VanGennip and Matt Upchurch each had two RBIs and Josh Foster picked up a pair of singles.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Central 93, Oakville 92

Katie Maginel took home four first-place finishes as the Tigers won a close road match.

Maginel finished first in the 100 free (1:00.50), 200 IM (2:33.18), medley relay (2:08.37) and 400 free relay (4:12.71). Cassie Kipper, Brett Ford and Hannah Lewis rounded out the medley relay team. Lauren Sulser, Kipper and Lewis were on the first-place 400 free relay.

Ford picked up another first in the 100 breast (1:19:15). Cara Crawford finished second in the 50 meter dive, Lewis took second in the 50 free (28.48), Kipper finished second in the 100 back (1:12.46) and the 200 free relay team finished first (1:59.28). Kipper, Jessica Yarbro, Sara Burns and Amanda Dewrock made up the top-finishing 200 free relay team.

GIRLS SOCCER

Notre Dame 1, St. Louis Notre Dame 0

Sierra Ellis picked up a first-half goal and goalie Katie Palmer made it stick as the Bulldogs picked up their first win over Missouri power St. Louis Notre Dame in school history.

Notre Dame's defense was the star. The Bulldogs allowed 11 shots, but only two within the box.

"Our defense was outstanding," Notre Dame coach Jeff Worley said.

Amanda Dirnberger picked up the assist on Ellis' goal.

"It's a great start for us," Worley said. "We've really been moving the ball well in practice."

Central 1, St. Vincent 0

Chelsey Oliver scored with two minutes remaining to lift the visiting Tigers girls to a 1-0 win in their season opener.

Katie Miller picked up the assist on Oliver's game-winning goal. Meghan Orr recorded the shutout for the Tigers. Central's junior varsity team picked up a 2-0 victory over St. Vincent. Lizzy Alberson scored both of the Tiger goals.-- From staff reports
