McDowell lifts Jackson to a shutout

Austin McDowell threw a complete-game shutout and Jackson took advantage of seven Chaffee errors to win 5-0 in a SEMO Conference baseball game at Chaffee Tuesday.

McDowell scattered six hits over seven innings. Jake Carter and McDowell both had two hits for Jackson (2-3), which finished with five hits.

Chaffee (2-4) once again had trouble in the field. Starter Zac Horman went six innings, allowing five hits and five walks. He struck out five.

With little going on offensively, Horrell said the 5-0 score didn't represent the tone of the game.

Korey Chapman and Brandon Davis each had two hits for Chaffee.

Leopold 4, Bell City 1

Josh Van de Ven struck out nine in a complete-game two-hitter at Leopold.

Van de Ven walked two and let in one unearned run. Offensively, the Wildcats (2-1) managed only four hits, two from Van de Ven.

Jack Daniels got the loss for the Cubs.

Oran vs. NMCC, ppd.

Oran and New Madrid County Central were tied 3-3 after nine innings when the game was called due to darkness. The teams combined for more walks (15) than hits (11).

Tyler Nelson and Trey Graviett struck out 13 for Oran (3-0). There are no plans yet to complete the game.

GIRLS SOCCER

Notre Dame 2, Carbondale (Ill.) 0

A night after handing Jackson its first loss, Notre Dame went on the road and won.

The Bulldogs (7-1-1) struggled to get on the scoreboard early, but finally found the back of the net with 10 minutes remaining. Sara Berkbigler broke the 0-0 tie. Sierra Ellis added an insurance goal late. Assists went to Megan Holloway and Emily Buehrle. Katie Palmer picked up the shutout.

Central 2, Perryville 1

Central evened its record at 4-4 and rallied to beat visiting Perryville.

Perryville scored first on a goal by Ashley Blyzes, but Central made it 1-1 by halftime when Megan Richards scored with assists from Kaylee Ramsey.

Kate Miller scored for the Tigers in the second half. Megan McDonald assisted.

The JV game ended 0-0.

Jackson 10, Marion (Ill.) 0

Jackson bounced back from its first loss by routing visiting Marion.

Molly Hartmann led the Indians (6-1) with five goals and four assists. Courtney Urhahn and Lucy Hartmann each added two goals. Elizabeth Nussbaum also scored.

Jackson's JV romped 9-0.

SOFTBALL

Leopold 15, Bell City 10

Lori Vandermierden went 3-for-4 with a home run, double and four RBIs as Leopold won a high-scoring affair at home.

The teams combined for 27 hits, with 10 of the Wildcats' 12 hits coming from four players. Besides Vandermierden's three hits, Anna Nenninger and Courtney Wesbecher had two apiece and Holly Jansen had three. Jansen added three RBIs. Jessica Stoverink picked up her third win for Leopold (4-0).

Katie Goodman led the Cubs offense with a 4-for-4 performance and three RBIs. Katie Niemczyk went 3-for-4, and Amber Hepner and Amy Green had two hits apiece.

TRACK AND FIELD

East Prairie quad

The Notre Dame girls squad won every event while setting three school records at East Prairie. Erin Pfau broke records in the 100 meters (13.1 seconds) and 200 meters (27.7). Katie Daniel also set the school record in the 100 meter high hurdles (18.4).

Ashley Millham participated in four winning events, taking the 800 meters and the high jump while running on the winning 800 and 1,600 relay teams.

On the boys side, Cory Beussink won the long jump and triple jump and was on the winning 400 and 800 relays. Freshman Jason Delgado ran three winning events: the 1,600, 800 and 1,600 relay.

Festus Invitational

Perryville won the boys division of the Festus Invitational with a strong meet from Kyle Dobbelare.

Dobbelare won the long jump, 110 and 300 meter hurdles. Kent Hadler won the 800- and 1,600-meter runs, Kevin Bohnert won the 100-meter dash and Chris Porter won the triple jump.

In the girls division, Perryville finished sixth. Melissa Crannick won the 100-meter dash and Hannah Steffens won the 3,200-meter run.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Central second in meet

Jackie Urlacher had the only first-place finish for Central in a tri-meet at Parkway North.

Urlacher won the diving competition with 187.75 points. Cassie Kipper finished second in the 100 and 200 free. Katie Maginel took second in the 100 fly and 50 free.
