Monsignor Joseph H. Huels, 83, former pastor of St. Mary's Cathedral, died April 15 at St. Francis Medical Center; Huels was born Sept. 8, 1909, in St. Louis, son of Joseph and Methildis Richter Huels; he was ordained in 1934; after serving numerous parishes in St. Louis Archdiocese and Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese, he was appointed pastor of St. Mary's in 1967.

Steps to start grading work around building, to lay out entrances and to begin construction of sidewalks point to final stages of building operations at new Central High School, where contractors have been paid total of $833.666.30 on their contract awards of $991,005.15.

Winter pays savage, out-of-season return to Cape Girardeau, winging in on driving northerly wind that carries 1.68 inches of rain before it up to 8 a.m. today and threatens to continue intermittently throughout day; rain changes to sleet briefly and peppers down in steady fall, as thermometer hovers at 31 degrees.

75 years ago: April 18, 1928

Funeral services are held at Burfordville in afternoon for George W. Bast, 89, Confederate war veteran and native of Cape Girardeau County, who died at home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Truman Miller, near Millersville, yesterday.

Reorganization of Boy Scout work in Cape Girardeau, with ultimate plan of forming council and maintaining executive here, is being worked out by local leaders in cooperation with O.J. Williams, field scout executive for Missouri Pacific Railroad.
